Wednesday Meeting on MSI Soccer Stadium take over of Julius West Middle School fields

Most likely, the majority (all?) of the players, families, and personnel involved live in the county but not the city (or even out of the county). The City of Rockville has a very good and responsive local government, elected by people within the city. Julius West is surrounded by a very wealthy neighborhood and there's a council election coming up so I doubt anything will get done before November.

The question I have is, how would people that think this is okay like it if someone was screaming and shining bright lights into their windows until midnight?

Do you even understand how light Ming works? These are directional lights, like spot lights, that shines only onto the field. Midnight? No one is practicing soccer at midnight. And the lighting system has a timer so you can’t turn them on after a set time.

Clearly the people with kids at Julius West, and kids who play MSI who have had their schedules messed up for 4 weeks now (like mine), are happy with the fields and want them open!

Most of the discussion here has been about parking and bathrooms.

Do you realize that MSI has been using the JW grass field for years? My DD team practiced here for the last two years. We also had games here too.

No one Parent Coalition ever mentioned about parking and/or bathrooms previously until the turf field was built.

Note: MSI indicated that the field will not be used any differently or any more than was previously used when it had grass (I.e. same amount of practices, games, players and parents).

People please calm down. MSI is working this out. This dispute has nothing to do with these nutcase parents complaining about parking and bathrooms. Sadly these parents have nothing to do but check and recheck the MD Public Schools forum on DCUM. The dispute is about $$ and who is going to pay for maintenance of the turf fields. MSI does not want to pay for maintenance as that was not in the original contract. They will hopefully work it out and our kids will be playing on the beautiful new turf field under the lights before we know it. Frankly, I don't care if MSI pays for it or not. I only care that my kid can play soccer on the new fields as was planned all along.

Here's a little advice for the crazy parents posting here about parking and bathrooms...the weather has been glorious. Maybe step away from the keyboard and take a walk. Get your mind off the negative and move on.

With the lighted fields, people can even take walks, jog and/or do other exercises when it gets dark especially during the winter months when it gets dark around 6:30om.

You must not be from around here. The City of Rockville is a very safe place and people often walk after dark in complete safety. I walk my dog and see others doing the same as well as jogging after dark and no one has any problems. Again, maybe you are new here or from some other part of the county and don't know anything about Rockville. The City of Rockville even has it's own police department that are fast to respond to all calls. Much faster than the county cops you would call. People don't want bright stadium lights shining into their house windows after their kid's bedtimes. The City of Rockville has complete authority over ordinances within the city. If they want, the City Council could make it impossible for MSI to ever use that field.

Which windows, specifically, are you referring to? Here's what's next to the fields:

1. I270
2. The I270/Falls Rd interchange
3. The middle school

It’s called directional lights. Go look at Wootton HS before you complain about lights shining on people’s houses. Gee Wiz!!

Also, all of our games that are getting cancelled for JW field are between 8am and 6:30pm. The 6:30pm one is unusually late. Newsflash: MSI parents don’t want their kids playing at midnight either. These games do not go until midnight. You people are full on crazy pants and apparently have the City if Rockville wrapped around your finger.

+1000. And don’t people put curtains/blinds on their windows? This is not a poor neighborhood that people can’t afford to install blinds on their windows.

You live in Rockville or City of Rockville? Are you able to vote in the upcoming election? Because it's strange if you think that neighborhood has a lot of crime if you're familiar with the City of Rockville. The best part about the city is that they listen to constituents. Remember when they had that vote on the Twinbrook Quarter? Nearly everyone from the City of Rockville that talked wanted it. Nearly everyone outside the city (Bethesda, North Bethesda, Gaithersburg) did not want it. They voted for it anyway and people from North Bethesda were complaining that means that they can't build more housing outside the city. lol

City of Rockville!! I didn’t say it wasn’t safe but at the same time, we have rape, armed robberies, break-ins, etc too.

Well you are pretty delusional if you have any say about anything with these fields. Yes, MSI will probably not play on these fields until next season because of you. But after the election, these fields will be used by MSI and other soccer, football, lacrosse organizations under the lights whether you like it or not. All you managed to do was to disrupt a soccer season for MSI families. Congrats.

JULIUS WEST MS SOCCER FIELDS UPDATE

Update on Status of New Soccer Fields at Julius West MS (posted 9/25/19)

As most of you know, MSI has funded the development of vastly improved soccer fields at Julius West Middle School, including both synthetic turf and lights. We look forward to all the kids enjoying many years of improved experience because of these superior surfaces! These new fields already are being enjoyed by Julius West MS students, who no longer have physical education classes forced indoors due to unplayable field conditions, and we are excited to think about MSI kids and others joining them some day soon!

Even though these fields were completed weeks ago, MSI is not yet able to utilize these fields, while a required Memorandum of Understanding continues to be developed between MCPS and City of Rockville, MSI has very little role in this process, other than being asked for usage information and encouraging all parties to keep the process moving. There are counter-claims from both MCPS and City of Rockville, stating who is to blame. MSI does not have an opinion as to who is to blame, and a note that went out to many MSI families informing them of the rescheduling of this weekend's games that had been hoped to be played at JWMS did not intend to place the "blame" on City of Rockville. It simply stated that we must have City of Rockville usage approval before MSI use may proceed, and that the City of Rockville approval is not being provided until various issues are able to be agreed upon by MCPS and City of Rockville.

MSI looks forward to the day that even more kids will be able to enjoy these fields. For those that are wondering, an important note is that the anticipated parking peak volume associated with MSI's intended use is no greater than our decades-long historic Saturday use of these fields. The peak number of families and players involved will NOT increase, and will remain at the same levels with which there have been no problems with traffic or parking in the past (concerns that all parties, including MSI, have taken quite seriously). This information, and much more, has been shared repeatedly at several public meetings, and at meetings of nearby civic associations that were attended by MSI representatives, as well.

Projected Access Time Frame: Unfortunately, we do not project access until the end of the fall season.
d

MSI continues to be hyper focused on themselves and clueless about the neighborhood.

The issue with overflow parking is that the fields have been used as overflow parking on busy school nights. That use has now been removed by MSI for their own purposes. Overflow parking will be where now for school events? MSI has not come up with a solution to that issue yet.

The lighting report has already been completed and the City of Rockville, MSI and MCPS all know that the lights will shine on to 270, the ramps and on to Falls Road and neighbors.

Where can drivers purchase black out curtains for their cars as they drive by these stadium lights?

Sounds more like a mcps problem to me. Mcps approved and built the fields. Should have thought of that a long time ago. MSI will be fine. They will have to reschedule the rest of this season’s games but will be playing under the lights eventually whether you like it or not.

I guess it's nice that you're concerned about the effect of light pollution on people driving by in cars at night on a 12-lane interstate highway?

You’re comparing a full contact and tackling sport of football vs soccer? Julius West is a Middle School. They don’t have football. These are the only sports they have: Cross Country, Softball, Basketball and Soccer.

It is the soccer players that are complaining about these new artificial turf fields. They have gone to the Board of Education with their complaints. See their public testimony.
