Not a lot of white people who don’t have some record of doing, supporting, living through or taking advantage of racist policies from about 1000BC to about the 21st cen. Should they all be shunned? That is quite the entitled opinion for a minority group with little financial or political power to feel entitled to enforce. History is filled with winner and losers but it is what it is. The winners name stuff, the losers get the scraps... if they are lucky.

NP. Disagreeing with your statement. Woodrow Wilson effectively decimated what was becoming a black middle class in DC. That discussion is very relevant. We aren't talking about what random white people did. But his atrocities were disgusting - would you agree with having a school named after Hitler? I'm not trying to convince people of changing the name but when you look at his particular history it is truly awful. Many black families in DC were hurt by it - it cut off their ability to hand down wealth to their families. This is well documented and I think at a minimum people should know the history before making stupid statements. Stop trying to move the bar of the discussion - it only reveals your own ignorance and biases.

Comparing Woodrow Wilson to Adolf Hitler?! I sure hope that you didn’t learn history from DCPS. Your ignorance is stunning.

She keeps wanting to create more on-level (not challenging) classes for the lowest performing kids and has no interest in more advanced options for kids who need more than what Wilson is offering.

Much of what you wrote is just not true.

Another Wilson parent here and I don’t think it is wrong at all. Principal has communicated many times that she has no issues with overcrowding as she wants Wilson to be open to students from all wards. That is not her decision to make. Wilson is supposed to be a neighborhood school. She often refers to the ward 3 parents as annoying and entitled. I don’t think that is cool.

No, Wilson is supposed to comply with feeder and boundary policies set by our elected officials, which the schools is doing. Nowhere is it written that Wilson is "supposed to be a neighborhood school."

Also, in what context does the Wilson principal "often refer to ward 3 parents as entitled and annoying"? I've never heard that, and I can't imagine in what situation I would heard that. Did you just pull that out of your @ss?

Nope. I read all her newsletters from August to December and she is always scolding the neighborhood parents. Do you read them? She pretty much said that overcrowding is not something she wants to do anything about as she does not want to reduce the number of AA kids at the school. Also, that other principals always tell her that they would never want to be at Wilson because of the annoying and hyper parents, etc.

FFS, you people can't read. See why the principal doesn't wanna deal with y'all.

Yes black poverty can be traced back to Wilson

Talk about passing the buck looking for a simple answer

Interesting that Wilson is now white majority. Coincides with the rise in graduation rates and test scores

Why is she still around? She has the views of some Barry-era relic even though she’s not from DC. Didn’t she get her kid into Wilson by going around the lottery?

Integration is such a liberal white folks things. Have you actually talked to any black folks almost none actually want it. In fact most people are fine with the current DC education landscape.

The key for schools is always the principal. There are several success stories with public and charters getting real results with at-risk kids. Its time to take some of the assistant principals at these schools and give them their own schools. That's the only change that needs to happen.

In fact, many of the black folks I have talked to about school options have specifically mentioned an integrated school as important to them. And it certainly a focus of black writers/reporters like Nikole Hannah-Jones.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/06/magazine/the-resegregation-of-jefferson-county.html

+1. Black person here (raises hand). I want integrated schools, and know plenty of other black people who agree with me. Why revisit this point? We know from history that predominantly black/brown schools don't get the same resources as white schools (Brown vs. Board, anyone?). Plus, I think there is value in attending school with people from different backgrounds--I wish more on this thread felt that way.

Problem is kids get a boost when they are exsposed to kids who have more then them, seen more or are more driven. When the kids are poorer, checked-out or simpley unmotivated, that amount of different backgrounds actually act as a drag on the other kids. You are looking at it from the “your kids get something” out of it, others view it as drains on valuable resources they are not accustomed to sharing. Bottom line is there aren’t enough haves to prop up all the have-nots. They will have to figure it out by them selves

Why not forced busing?

I think she would be happier being principal of Roosevelt, Coolidge, Dunbar, etc., given how much she complains about ward 3 parents. More disturbing to me, none of my kids teachers seem to like her or feel she is helpful to them.

Doesn't matter what era, if it's the only way to get DC schools integrated. Typically, people only object when it affects them personally.

Why would teachers share this with parents of their students?? Seems highly inappropriate and unprofessional to gossip with parents about school leadership.
