99% of Hispanics are either fully or partially white in stupid US racial terms, so that's in fact a white majority.

In our school systems and when applying to college, the ones whose records I've seen do not check Caucasian. They check Hispanic.

Yes, and if you had an Italian-American box many "whites" would check that.

So? Would they stop being racially white?

You are a persistent little thing, I’ll give you that.

But really, what is your point?

Rather, her opinion (shared by many, obviously), should lead one to consider WHICH boundaries should be trimmed. Therefore, if increasing the percentage of "white" students at Wilson is a significant concern when discussing the prospect of boundary review (as it obviously is for her, and many others), then what you have to do is trim the number of white students with access to Wilson, as part of the boundary review process.

That's clearly hard to do when Deal is a main feeder school. Maybe what you do is trim the number of "white" elementary schools that feed into Deal, and instead send them over to Hardy. Of course, you would then have to then prevent the expanded white population at Hardy from feeding into Wilson; they would have to go somewhere else, to a different high school. Hence, the discussion about the "New Western" that crops up a lot in these boards. But a consequence of this kind of discussion is that it annoys the same people who don't want "white" people to benefit from the boundary review at Wilson, because a "New Western" would be perceived as giving the White People something they don't deserve.

In the end, everyone simply needs to cooperate and stop being so hung up on race, IF overcrowding at Deal and Wilson is a problem that needs to be addressed. Otherwise, the problem just keeps getting worse and worse.

Perhaps a solution is to decentralize DCPS by referendum. Split it up into several districts, each with a separate board. The districts could be one ward or several wards that choose to combine together. Let the smaller districts decide what matters to it: academic rigor, advanced honors classes vs honors for all’, lifetime employment for teachers, football excellence, etc. Each district can decide how to spend the per pupil allocation given to it based on the needs of the district.

Intriguing idea, but would fly in crazy racial-politics DC.

It’s funny how people love to hate white people but flock to anything that has the blanco touch. Stockholm syndrome? All over a average test score school that just happens to be the one not black high school in the city.

It would be great to see the Asian percentage higher at Wilson. It would shift the culture of the school a bit and encourage more kids to get serious about their work.

Except the Asian students at Wilson are only the strongest performers on in seat attendance. Their SAT, PSATs and average AP scores are lower than their white peers, who themselves score poorly on average compared to SWW.

Bright Asian students don't go to Wilson. Their families know better.

Why?! Wilson is the top high school ... for DC.

Depends what you value. Wilson is the best 'comprehensive' high school, but judging by academic results (PARCC, SATs, % of students scoring 3+ on one or more APS) two application schools and a couple charters are better.

It's funny how so many people who presumably feel that they belong to a superior group feel the need to spend so much time on an anonymous message board proclaiming it. Here's a tip: superior people don't feel the need to proclaim their superiority to internet strangers. Your persistent posts any time that a discussion of Wilson HS comes up are deeply pathetic and suggest to me a lot of insecurity. I hope you work that out.

Thinking people understand that socio-economic factors determine economic success, and the SES of Wilson is totally different than the other comprehensive high schools in the city. Of course, they also know that Wilson's PARCC scores are much worse than those at Banneker and McKinley, which are both almost entirely black and Walls, which has similar demographics to Wilson.

This discussion is deeply stupid. If you guys actually read the report, you would see that purposes of analysis that's of any interest to people actually trying to help kids, Latinx students are a group have totally different results (reflecting the different challenges of the particular cohort attending Wilson) than white kids. If we were talking about Latinx kids at WIS or GDS, of course the results would be different and the distinction may be meaningless because those kids probably share much of the experience of their white classmates. At Wilson, on average, that's not the case and the distinction it completely meaningful in terms of results. But of course, that's discussion of attempts to help kids, not weird race baiting, which is what PPs are all about (rather pathetically).

The race-baiting PP is a busy bee today. See Sheperd Park thread.

Saw that one in real estate. I wonder if that PP(s) is bored off from work, or depressed around the holidays, or something.
