People variously use Latinx or Latin@ to refer to Latino and Latina in a single word. Kinda showing your ignorance here... |
They do, but it's not without controversy. Not the least of which, a non-English speaking Latinx person would have difficulty pronouncing "Latinx." Personally I think it's ok for people to self-identify that way, but I think it's far from settled that it should be universal. I mean, are all Spanish nouns going to end in "x" now? Ultimately I'd prefer "Latinos and Latinas" if you need to be gender inclusive. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2018/09/14/latinx-an-offense-to-the-spanish-language-or-a-nod-to-inclusion/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.e45881a82c84 https://www.latimes.com/opinion/op-ed/la-oe-hernandez-the-case-against-latinx-20171217-story.html |
DP. Maybe so, but it's still nothing to "LOL" at. I also know a few Latinas who use the term (they are academics, if that makes any difference). |
Jajaha Latinx jajaha |
| I get annoyed at DCPS and Wilson administrators for acting like Wilson is such a great school. It is a decent school that looks amazing compared with the other DCPS comprehensive highschools that are mostly completely disfunctional. Wilson is acceptable as a school to send my kids but barely so. It has so much potential with a cohort of committed parents, students and interesting diversity but smug and complacent administrators + central office indifference really holds it back. Don’t get me started on Banneker, Walls and McKinley Tech. They also act like they are MIT and Harvard level when they are really more like Kentucky or Alabama State. |

Oh honey, bless your heart. Don't worry -- nobody's going to come force you to be gay. Go back to your fox news now and let the people who actually have kids at the school talk. |
In Spanish we write "Ja ja ja" or "je je je." Not "jajaha". Also, "latinx", "latino" and "latina" are not capitalized in Spanish, only in English. And, yeah, sexism in the Spanish language is important and a much discussed topic just now. In this article (https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenguaje_no_sexista) see the sections on "Propuestas hacia un lenguaje no sexista" and "El uso de la arroba, la equis y el asterisco." |

I think latinx is all of these things. Yes I believe it is part of the political correctness gender sensitivity ratcheting up we are experiencing in this country. Yes it is annoying as it goes against grammar norms in English regarding gendering nouns. Yes it’s good because it calls attention to gender issues where people have legitimate grievances and unresolved problems in American society. Yes it is nonsensical in Spanish and completely a construct of English speakers - latin@ is the more natural Spanish construct.
There are plenty of things that are both good and lame as hell. Things you roll your eyes at and encourage people to say. Because we’re trying to be better people. |
| Is there a problem? Really? |
Latinx is an insult on the Spanish language perpetrated by clueless gringos. |
| Let's try it on the Germans and see how they like it. Gerxans? Germyn? Germynx? |
Latinx is like Manx. |
I grounded one of my kids for saying “they” when referring to the singular. I want my children to respect property grammar. At least “it” would be more grammatically appropriate than “they.” |
| Typo correction: Proper grammar. |
