do you ask about guns at a family's house before letting your kid go to a playdate there?

Why would they tell you if they have weapons?
They simply will say they don't have any.

Huh? We have guns in the house and of course I would tell you, particularly if you asked me.

We will tell you and show you (the parent not the kids) the safe etc. if that still makes you uncomfortable that’s fine and my kid will ply at your house instead.

Do all military families have guns, I.e., is having them in the home required? We know some and I have never asked about whether they have guns and if so how they are stored, but this makes me think I probably should.

What about option #3 - people who don’t hunt or have guns for self defense, but just enjoy the sport of target shooting?

How do you enjoy your "hobby" when you know that your ability to do that costs countless innocent children and women and men their lives every single day in this country? 1,300 children a year. A woman in the U.S. is fatally shot by her current or former intimate partner every 16 hours. But I'm glad you enjoy your hobby. Let me know when you find your soul?

So gun owners are all dishonest?

AR-15 owner destroys his gun: "Pappalardo said: 'Is the right to own this weapon more important than someone's life?'"

I own a gun solely for sport. I do not hunt, and I do not anticipate ever using it for personal protection. I would gladly give up my gun if it saved lives. In fact, I would give up my gun if it saved even a single life. I would also have been willing to jump through A LOT more hoops than I did in order to purchase it. But me throwing my gun away doesn't accomplish anything. So just stop with this. You are making enemies out of people who would otherwise be your allies. No one I know who owns a gun (all upper middle class people, in case you're wondering what crowds I run with) says they do so because of the second amendment. None of them think they need to protect themselves from the government. And none of them would do or have done anything but support stricter gun safety laws. Those of you who are demonizing all gun owners are doing more harm to the progress of gun safety in this country than you are good. Just take a second to realize that, and stop being so polarizing. It's ugly.

You own a car, right? Cars kill countless innocent children and women and men every single day in this country. Over 30,000 a year. Four people every hour. If you enjoy your car then you are a soulless wretch.

You have no right to an honest answer to the question.

Whether a purse with a pill box is left in the open? Would you consider someone asking you what medications you’re on too intrusive? Because accidental ingestion and overdose of medications (yes, even innocently, not kids on heroin or anything) is a bigger problem for kids these days than an accidental shooting. You all are worried about the wrong pervasive problem here, and hypocrites to boot.

Guns are now the third leading cause of death for U.S. children.

Nope.

Auto accidents, suffocation, drowning, poisoning, burns, and falls are all ahead of guns.

Kill things for fun? Most hunters I know have a deep respect for the animals they kill. They practice so they can kill a deer in one shot and not maim it. That deer died more humanely than your grass fed cow/ beef you ate.

Are you blaming the butchers at meat processing plants also for enjoying to kill things?!

I hate this analogy so much. The primary purpose of cars is NOT to kill. The primary purpose of cars is to transport people and things from one place to another. When cars are used incorrectly, they kill.

In contrast, guns are meant to kill. That is their sole purpose. They might be used to kill animals for food, but they're still being used to kill. That is particularly true with an AR-15, since it's not a particularly good hunting weapon. Its sole purpose is to kill other living things in an efficient manner. That is completely and utterly different than a car.

That rules out all homes with police officers, FBI agents, .....

Gun owner here. I don’t own own guns primarily to hunt or defend myself, it’s really just a hobby. I shoot at the range, come home and store my guns, and that’s it. Most people would not guess I own a gun. I — and most other gun owners I know— are absolutely in favor of stricter gun laws. Guns should absolutely be regulated and licensed. But whenever guns come up, I find that the left (even people who are seemingly reasonable/tolerant otherwise) starts screaming that GUNS KILL, we will take your guns, ALL GUN OWNERS ARE EVIL, etc. This gets the extreme right riled up and they start screaming that the guns will have to pried from their cold, dead hands, COME AND TAKE THEM, etc.

I’d love to see more moderate folks (including myself) come together and pass some common sense gun laws. Surely even the far left can get behind that? Yet every time I try to discuss, I get called names and get that knee jerk reaction. Let’s be real, my guns aren’t going anywhere. This country is not going to banning all guns and confiscating mine. I do think we need more regulation and don’t understand why I should get demonized for that.

^ Btw if there are well organized groups or well known organizations that help the groups I discussed come together, I’d love to know what they are.

I'm a PP who said much the same things you just did. I agree with you that the far left is doing as much if not more than the far right to hurt this cause.
