Magnet MS results - Takoma Park & Eastern - anyone heard today?

Is it the same at Eastern?

Wow, so there are really only 75 spots for TPM for the whole county.

Just, for what it is worth, based on chatter this morning at the HGC bus stop, there are several kids with 99th percentiles all the way across zoned for TPMS who didn't get in.

Folks this morning weren't even sure the 25 seats were still up for grabs as a result.

No. TPMS is the program for the downcounty. There is also a program for the upcounty.

No. Traditionally there have been 125 TPMS spots with 25 held for kids zoned for the school. This makes it EASIER for the rest of the county, not harder.

25 seats for local kids and 100 for the rest.

No - it does not make it easier for the rest; there is a budget for 125 students, of which 25 is reserved for TPMS.

So rest - 25 middle schools - compete for 100 seats. Instead of 26 middle schools competing for 125 seats. It makes it EASIER only for the TPMS kids.

Whether you support this policy or not (I used to support this policy even though we are not zoned for TPMS, but now I am not so sure), it is up-is-downism to say this makes it easier for the rest of the schools.

Did anyone who did not receive a letter yesterday get something in the mail today? Seems crazy that they are reportedly plannng on holding open houses next week and they haven’t even sent all results at this point.

Thanks for the clarification. Gosh so no acceptances yet.

These kids with MAP-M over 260, 270 in forth grade, 290 in fifth grade, MAP-R over 240 in forth grade, 250 in fifth grade, Lexile reading score almost college-level, principle or assistant principle player in MCYO orchestras (pre or chamber), national athletic awards winner (swimming, badminton, figure skating, chess), math Kangaroo state and national winners, AoPs top points winners in Algebra I. I have no any comments. But, please don't use the so-called "getting TPMS or EMS tends to be more competitive than getting into HGC program" to make your point. Getting into Cold Spring HGC is much more competitive than any other HGC program.

Although it is very disappointing, I think it is good to go away from such disaster selection process.

Think about it - this makes sense. They looked at home school cohort - conceivably those kids will have many kids just like them at the home school and will be taught accordingly. What blows is that that curriculum is completely different, so they are missing out on the curriculum offered by Eastern/TPMS. However, they will be excel at their home school where they can push each other to do better.

I call BS. There is no way, just no way that "0 kid" got accepted this year. Your source is wrong, PP; I know it's disappointing that your child didn't get in, but someone from their class definitely did, you just don't know about it.

I mean, if it weren't for those 25 seats, then TPMS would have 100 seats like Eastern. The truth is that we have no idea what MCPS is going with this, but the point is that it appears living in bounds can't confer THAT large of an advantage if kids in the 99th percentile across the board, with good grades, who are in-bounds, also got rejections yesterday.

There are 25 seats reserved in the magnet program for local TPMS students. So there is a very high probability - compared to the friends who are not zoned for TPMS - your DD will be accepted.

There you go. Acceptance is based on diversity.

?

Typically the definition of diversity does not include "attending the home school that hosts the program".

I'm the one zoned for TPMS, and my DD wouldn't meet anybody's definition of diversity, by any stretch of the imagination. So even if she did get one of the home-school slots, I don't know how that would prove anything about diversity. But I'm guessing it does demonstrate something about your assumptions regarding Takoma Park and Silver Spring.

Just an anecdote - I got a call from AEI today about an unrelated matter and they sounded CRAZED over there.

No. Without the TPMS seats, there would still only be 100 seats. So without the TPMS seats, the kids from TPMS would be competing for those same 100 seats too.
