School Opening Predictions for Tuesday?

Anonymous

Yes, went outside fully layered outside 7 minutes to clean the car and came back with frozen fingers.

And, it is 20 degrees outside.

Are any kids expected to walk to the bus stop and wait for the bus in 7-8 degrees tomorrow morning? Or in 12-13 degrees temperatures for delayed opening?

I truly hope not!

Do folks on this board not know that kids in Minnesota do this all winter long? Dress your kids appropriately and send them to school. It’s not that hard. Warm jacket, layers, gloves, scarf, hat. They will be fine.

Oh come on. I have Raynaud's syndrome, and was able to shovel and scrape, and walk the dog, without killing my fingers. It's a beautiful winter day. I'm fine with a delay because high schoolers go out before dawn to catch buses or drive to their schools, which is dangerous in icy conditions... but other than that, really, the weather is perfectly fine. Much of the northern hemisphere used to have every winter like this. If you hail from the tropics, maybe you're not used to it, but this is actually normal. You need to learn to live with it, and even enjoy it.

With gloves. Or pockets. It's not hard.

There are people without everywhere, even in Vermont. We can’t close school because of that. There are places to get winter gear for those less fortunate.

Yeah, but half of them are Scandinavian. You can't expect people in Maryland to be able to survive that.

Single digit temperatures can be dangerous, especially for people who aren't used to having to prepare for it. But remember the people who don't have cars are the ones who are best aware of the need to bundle up. It's been pretty cold the past few weeks. It's not like people don't know their kids' hands can get cold. They've had time to get gloves. If they haven't done that they should keep their kids home. But that's entirely their choice.

This will be a problem all week. There are some students who don't have proper coats and have to wait at the bus stop. I don't know what the answer is but it's worrying.

yeah moco Frederick and other MD areas are not Minnesota. If we were we'd have tons of snow clearing trucks and an entire industry etc. and experience around all that.

I think a delay makes sense. It will feel like single digits and sometimes buses run late. DC's ran 30 minutes late on Friday.

Yeah. I’m not sure what to think about tomorrow especially since Wednesday is going to be the really bad cold day.

I don’t know what the bar is/was but when we lived outside Boston a few years ago, local districts closed for super cold weather too.

Principal just sent an email saying 2 hour delay for tomorrow.

If you're that concerned, buy a bunch of coats at the thrift store and hand them out at bus stops.

I think you'll find that the people that aren't wearing coats are doing so by choice. While you don't want a lot of exposed skin at these temperatures, you don't need a warm jacket if you're just going to be outside for a short period.

I think the answer is what has already been done. A cold weather advisory with the recommendation to wear layers. I am all for a social safety net and services to help low income families but neither MCPS nor the county government can do everything for every child.
