Queen of E's funeral fashion

Like look at Fergie and Beatrice:

Fergie's suit is too tight and totally the wrong shape for her body. Her hat looks silly and small (almost everyone who opts for these little fascinators instead of a proper hat looks silly, IMO, especially at a solemn occasion instead of a wedding). The gloves and sheer hose, which could look classy and traditional if she'd worn a more simple dress in an a-line with less fussiness, instead look twee and unfashionable.

Beatrice does better but her insistence on wearing her hair down looks sloppy -- her hat would look much better if she'd done a smooth updo like her mom. Her outfit is still too fussy for the occasion (lace pleat insets AND gold buttons? come on -- it is a FUNERAL).

Everyone is praising Kate for nailing it, which she did, but also -- it's not that hard! Wear clothes that actually fit and don't make you look like a sausage in a casing. Opt for simple and classic over adorned and complicated. Get your hear done and tame fly-aways. Since you are wearing a hat which is not something women almost every do other than at these events, keep it simple and classic and make sure it is the proper size and shape for your head. Yes, this would be a tall order for a random American, but these people are actual royalty. Whyyyyyy have the not figured it out yet? This assignment was especially easy because (1) you had lots of time to plan, (2) the color scheme was very simple, and (3) no one was going to criticize you for going to plain and simple on this one. And yet so many of them screwed it up. It's amazing.

Fergie has a very slight Mrs. Doubtfire vibe, no?

Kate looks perfect, as usual. I don't care for MM's hat. It looks like like a sun hat for the beach. But hats are hard to pull off or most, especially Americans that aren't used to buying and wearing them formally. Her dress is fine, but did she not keep the cape on? Someone mentioned bare arms..

The cape is part of the dress — she didn’t take it off. The “bare arms” squeals came from the forearms peeking from under the cape. More ridiculous headlines used against MM and no one else (similar to the OMG! They’re holding hands!! cry).

I made the bare arms comment. I didn’t see it criticized in the press. I just prefer arms covered at funerals and other solemn events. I don’t think she looks trashy, I was just making a comment about her fashion choice. I’m also one of those people who thinks women should only wear closed-toe shoes to the office. It’s just an opinion.

Sophie had bare arms and hands, but she wasn't called trashy. Not one person criticize her lack of gloves and her elbow length dress.

Exactly. People look at Meghan and think "what can I criticize about this." They look at other members of the royal family and look for things to praise. It's really transparent.

I think her outfit would look great if it was the same jacket with an a-line skirt that hit below the knee. That skirt is very unfortunate and such a weird choice for a woman her age who has a history with weight fluctuations. I think that shape is hard to pull off even when you are very thin -- skin tight around your butt and then the flare at the knees. It's like a style best suited for a cartoon.

There is a while thread bashing the other royals looks right next to this one for the sin of looking old at 75 and other ages. What’s that all about? Lots of criticism going around if you care to open your eyes.

I look at Meghan and don’t care what she’s wearing. I wonder how she can show up after calling her husbands family out on OPRAH. I mean come on now. That’s so over-the-top ridiculous. The fact that her supporters can’t see that speaks volumes. For him too. They are quite a pair.

The necklace was beautiful. Diana wore it a lot in her 20's and early 30's (before she passed.)

Well, we don’t think she wore it after death, doll.

We don't believe you. If MM had passed on attending the funeral, you would rail against that. How dare she not pay her last respects to the queen you would scream. She's a coward and could not bother to support her husband in his time of grief. She's such a narc you would say. So really PP, stop with your gaslighting BS.

Actually she did. There's a picture with all the women and Sophie had elbow length dress without gloves. I personally did not see a problem with her dress. It was quite lovely, but then again, I also thought all the women, including MM looked quite lovely.

+1 You can see exactly the same amount of Sophie’s arms and Meghan’s arms,

I still think sleeves are better than bare arms with a cape over it! The cape reminds me of a pashmina I guess. But again- I didn’t say MM looked trashy. I said that’s what I would have done in her place. To be fair, I think it depends on the photo. The cape shows more or less arms in various photos.

Even with 15 million in assets that Meghan and Harry have it can be tough to pull together these types of outfits with very short notice.

I'm assuming Harry picked up his suit from the military in the UK.

QEII was 96. That's not short notice.

Royals all have to travel with mourning wear, so they would have done this in their royal lives. Even after leaving royal life, they can choose to travel with black mourning wear.

Princess Elizabeth was caught without a black dress in Kenya when he father passed, and she made it a rule after that that everyone had to travel with something they could wear for mourning. Be prepared.

Carole Middleton wore 3/4 length sleeves that showed about the same amount of bare arm and I haven't seen anyone comment negatively on that. I agree that people should be fairly covered up at a funeral (no low necklines or short skirts, it's just distracting) but I feel that MM's dress was very covered up. It's not like she was wearing a sleeveless shift -- it's just that her forearms peak out of the cape part of the dress. Which presumably is why she also wore gloves.

I am also tired of everyone comparing MM to Kate as though they are in the same position and Kate just magically dressed better for the occasion. They are not. Kate is married to the heir to the throne and is a working royal -- her attire was almost certainly decided and made for her well in advance of this funeral and her look composed to look a very specific way. For instance, I would bet that the Queen likely specified what jewelry she would like Kate to wear to the funeral, which then dictated the rest of her outfit which was designed to show them off. Not kidding. Kate is very ensconced in the system of the RF and this funeral was planned to proceed and look perfect and she was part of that.

Meghan is just Harry's wife, doesn't even live in London, is not a working royal. She had to have a dress ordered quickly for the funeral, as well as all the other clothes she needed for the week's events. It's unsurprising that she wound up in a hat that was a bit light and summery for the event (it was a black version of one she's worn before by the same London designer who always makes her hats). Also not surprising that her dress wasn't just spot on perfect for the event like Kate's was -- again, she just had a black version of a dress she'd previously worn from a British designer she was familiar with who presumably could get it to her quickly. The fact that it's a simple dress and they'd made it for her before likely made it easier.

Could Meghan have looked more perfect with a bit more time and effort. Sure. But that's not how funerals work. She is not sitting around preparing for the Queen's funeral, which is literally one of the things Kate has been doing (not in a morbid way, but succession is just a fact of the RF and the queen was very old). She also does not spend her days going to royal events like other people at the wedding, and therefore does not have clothes in rotation or a dressmaker on call who could put something together quickly.

Kate and Meghan are not equals, but people like to treat them that way when they want to make a negative comparison (of either of them! this works both ways because it's about misogyny and criticizing women) because it's easy. Stop comparing them! They are in different situations with different expectations and different resources. They both acquitted themselves very well over the last week. That should be enough.

I just made a comment about Meghan’s arms. I didn’t even mention Kate. I’m not going to review each guest for their sleeve length to ensure I make the same comment about everyone. Relax.

Fine. I’m glad Kate’s sleeves wore long both because it was appropriate to the occasion, and because it covered the multi-strand pearl bracelet that she wore and that I didn’t particularly care for. Happy now?

You are taking this personally for some reason. I just think it's weird that people are criticizing MM's dress for showing too much arm when other people showed the same amount and don't get the criticism. Same with Beatrice and Fergie wearing shorter skirts and no one says anything.

Everything MM does is picked apart to the minutest detail and it's mysterious to me because I thought she looked nice and understated and seemed to be going out of her way not to draw attention to herself, and still people are raking her over the coals. Her hat is too summery, her dress showed too much arm, her makeup is too heavy.

Honestly, she looked better than 90% of the other people there. I don't get the criticism at all. She looked fine. I don't love everything about it but overall I think she did a really good job.
