Jill Biden looks completely ridiculous. TF is that stupid headband?

It looks like something she took off a Playboy bunny.

Really? Worse than the flower on Middleton's mother's hat?

They both looked inelegant, IMO. I like Jill but the bow headband looked childish. Carole looked gaudy.

It's funny to remember that the British press used to sneer at Kate/Kate's family bc their money is from their party supply business (even though they have aristocratic backgrounds). Now the whole family can do no wrong bc the press hates Meghan so much.

Kate and William have been a couple for 20 years. Kate kept her head down- as did her family, other than her Uncle Gary- and they were eventually accepted. Long before MM came on the scene. It was wrong the way Kate was treated too, but don’t tie her acceptance to MM. It’s incorrect and it also discounts everything that Kate did since marrying into the royal family.

You have to give it to Middleton and her family, they've been nothing but compliant of written and unwritten rules. Her acceptance has nothing to do with MM.

I just don't agree. I never saw the type of fawning she gets now before MM came on the scene. Although they did mostly give up on the commoner stuff once she got pregnant.

If she does get fawned over now than she did before MM....maybe its because "they" realized she is doing the job without complaint and with dignity? The juxtaposition of two women in similar roles and their very different responses to the criticism and the scrutiny.....turns out Kate is a gem.

Anyway, back to fashion....Kate is not fashionable but shes found a uniform...styles, cuts, fabrics that work for her. Isn't that what all us women at 40 want out of fashion?....or maybe thats just me.

Thank you for this! I had to call my sister to take a look at Jill’s headband. It was terrible. Maybe because of her blond hair?

I actually really liked the headband. She isn't British so why wear the hat? She is very appropriately bridging the gap. It's absolutely perfect.

I agree. Nothing will ever match the outrageous hats/facinators at William and Kate’s wedding. Dr. Jill is not British, she looked appropriate. I think everyone did. I loved the Queen, but she wasn’t exactly fashionable herself, but she looked great in what she wore.

Jill is not a Dr., and she looked like Minnie.

And who are you calling "the Queen"? Can someone be more ignorant and disrespectful?

Huh? The Queen is the Queen….Elizabeth to be exact. Jill Biden is absolutely a doctor.

Even with 15 million in assets that Meghan and Harry have it can be tough to pull together these types of outfits with very short notice.

I'm assuming Harry picked up his suit from the military in the UK.

Wow!

Other people think there's a connection between Melania's choices and Megan's

Honestly, where do people get these rules?

Seriously, it was her grandmother's funeral and you're saying black wasn't appropriate?

Charlotte looked fine and totally appropriate.

Especially the Americans, but plenty of the Brits as well -- people just seem to struggle with the "protocols" while still wanting to wear something eye-catching and interesting and most people fail, to be honest. Like look at Fergie and Beatrice:

Fergie's suit is too tight and totally the wrong shape for her body. Her hat looks silly and small (almost everyone who opts for these little fascinators instead of a proper hat looks silly, IMO, especially at a solemn occasion instead of a wedding). The gloves and sheer hose, which could look classy and traditional if she'd worn a more simple dress in an a-line with less fussiness, instead look twee and unfashionable.

Beatrice does better but her insistence on wearing her hair down looks sloppy -- her hat would look much better if she'd done a smooth updo like her mom. Her outfit is still too fussy for the occasion (lace pleat insets AND gold buttons? come on -- it is a FUNERAL).

Everyone is praising Kate for nailing it, which she did, but also -- it's not that hard! Wear clothes that actually fit and don't make you look like a sausage in a casing. Opt for simple and classic over adorned and complicated. Get your hear done and tame fly-aways. Since you are wearing a hat which is not something women almost every do other than at these events, keep it simple and classic and make sure it is the proper size and shape for your head. Yes, this would be a tall order for a random American, but these people are actual royalty. Whyyyyyy have the not fi
gured it out yet? This assignment was especially easy because (1) you had lots of time to plan, (2) the color scheme was very simple, and (3) no one was going to criticize you for going to plain and simple on this one. And yet so many of them screwed it up. It's amazing.

Beatrice looks just perfect. Lovely dress and beautiful.

Yes to Beatrice looking perfect! And I don’t get the Fergie hate. It is harder to look good on TV than in photos and I thought she looked amazing on-screen. Her hair was flawless and when I first saw her in a shot from the back I assumed it was one of the younger cousins or something. The expectations from PPs like this for how real people should look is insane. These are actual humans who have to put these clothes on, sit through 3 public funeral services in one day, and get in and out of cars and be photographed while doing it. They are not standing backstage being dressed by stylists and leaping onto a catwalk for a 30-second fashion show.

No matter what you want to believe, they do not all have seamstresses like the queen’s knocking out custom outfits on 5 minutes’ notice to perfectly fit their changing bodies. I found it hard to find a flaw in anyone’s outfits and mostly just thought how amazing it was that they didn’t look more rumpled by the end.

I'm the PP who joked about being on Team Queen Charlotte, but this would require that Charles, William and George all die or abdicate, and before George marries and produces an heir. It's pretty close to impossible, barring something like the Black Plague.

Seamstresses aren't a luxury for wealthy and which seamstress would say no to someone grieving for their royal connection.

I think they look great and add interest, but I never see anyone actually wearing them in real life unless they are elderly. It seems like a 1950's trend in America, but I'm thinking of getting one for my coat. I really liked that large pearl leaf one that Kate wore a week or two ago and that had been the Queen's.

I wear a broach on my wool winter coat -- I love it. I also like the look on sweaters. Even better, a silk scarf draped over a sweater and then secured with a broach! But yes, these latter examples feel over the top in most settings. If I were back in a conservative office I'd do it though. Especially as I get older, I think you can get away with stuff like this a little more that would look silly on a younger woman. But I'm WFH now and broaches on my indoor clothes are too much. But I have a big one I wear on my black coat in the winter and I love that it's a little bit of color and sparkle in the middle of the winter on an otherwise pretty unassuming black coat.

If you’re going to rock a brooch you should learn how to spell it first.

You seem to have lot of faith in spelling skills of fashionistas.

I'm no style guru but queen's pearl brooch and necklace looked dated on Kate.

Madeleine Albright and Jill Wine-Banks are the only women I’ve noticed wearing brooches in real life, and they are always dripping with symbolism like the Queen’s were.

I don’t think it’s about having a seamstress on call to knock out a custom outfit. It’s ok to wear something off the rack and find a size the fits. This is how most of the world shops. It doesn’t have to be Stella McCartney or Oscar de la Renta or any other designer to look nice.

The necklace was beautiful. Diana wore it a lot in her 20's and early 30's (before she passed.)

+1

I think this is a taste issue. I think Beatrice and Fergie looked tacky and inappropriate. I found their clothes to fussy and in Fergie’s case, too tight and inappropriate for her body type. It’s not about custom tailoring— I have no doubt they both had their clothes tailored. I just think they both would have looked better in something more simple, with a longer hem, and in Beatrice’s case, more elegant hair. For instance, I think Camilla, Sophie, Kate, Meghan, and the Queen of Spain all looked great. They are a variety of ages and body types but all found something both flattering and appropriate. None of them wore a skirt above the knee and none were wearing something as tight as Fergie’s suit. They all wore tidy up-dos. This is really not that challenging.

I think one reason Fergie’s and Beatrice look tacky to me is that it feels like they are trying to look eye-catching an interesting. It’s a funeral— don’t. Imagine for a moment how people would have reacted to Kate, Camilla, or Meghan wearing either of these outfits? Kate in a short dress with gold buttons and lace? Meghan in an ultra-tight suit? Camilla in either the above? They’d be excoriated.
