They wanted a bought councilmember who would support their agenda.

Yep. It doesn't matter which ward they represent, all councilmembers have the same vote on the council.

They also supported Mendelson and Bowser. Do you consider them “bought” council members?

I do.

But it's a little different, they were going to win anyway, the dark money just saved them the effort of fundraising (and media buying, that's a pain in the ass). On the other hand Goulet's candidacy wouldn't have existed at all without dark money.

Even billionaires don't drop that kind of money without wanting something in return.

TL;DR Not much

Frumin is so down to earth. He’s saying to call him “Matt” because he’s not sworn-in yet and even offering to take selfies with residents.

I’d rather have a council member give fair consideration to charters (attended by 55% of DC kids in public-funded schools) than bought and paid for by the DC “Smart Growth” developers lobby.

Not located in Ward 3 because there are no surplus public schools and real estate costs are prohibitive. But there are a number of kids in Ward 3 who attend DC Charters such as Washington Latin.

Why was there not a move to get behind Beau Finley?

Forget it, Beau. It's Tenleytown.

When you can show proof of the DC "Smart Growth" developers lobby having supported Frumin's campaign, then I will give you credence. A review of Goulet's donor list shows a who's who of developers and lobbyists.

I was called. The called ended with "this poll is on behalf of silverman for DC" or something like that.

The progressives were mostly Finley donors. Frumin mostly got the median DC W3 voter in Glover Park and AU Park, where he piled up pretty substantial margins. These are families that tend to heavily use DCPS or would like to. Frumin isn't a classic NIMBY or YIMBY, he seems pretty middle of the road by DC standards. Overall he is kinda boring, he'll fit W3 well.

I really wonder which way the elections would have played out if DFER didn't interfere. I think Goulet would have won on a classic law-and-order message, but they ended up consolidating the moderates behind frumin.

Without DFER, no one knew who Goulet was because has had zero community activity or engagement. No volunteer activities that tied him to any causes or neighborhood groups. Everyone else had something - Community Associations, ANCs, Non-Profits - but Goulet had nothing, There is no way he would have had any exposure without the DFER publicity and the Washington Post endorsement that came with it.

Alex Koma (Loose Lips at the Washington City Paper) has been easily the best reporter covering the race. He had several strong articles.

Did the DFER or the WaPo endorsement come first?
