Sorry - I'm taking the word of three of the best legal minds in our country over some reporter. YMMV.

Wow you all are thick. The reporting was that Robert's asked him to mask up. No mention of Sotomayor asking him to mask. So she correctly came out with a statement that she had not asked him to mask. Both the reporter and Sotomayor are being truthful here. We should be very concerned at all this effort to gaslight.

And, Roberts has said he made no such order or request.
You must have missed that......

You're actually calling others "thick"? And accusing others of "gaslighting"? Maybe take a look in the mirror. JFC. Roberts said:

“I did not request Justice Gorsuch or any other Justice to wear a mask on the bench,” the statement from Roberts said.

It amazes me that the previous poster apparently knows how to write but can't read.

I suspect Totenberg's sources are Sotomayor and/or her clerks. They were foolish enough to think the criticism Gorsuch would receive might outweigh the need for courtesy and consideration on the court. Their downfall was weaving Roberts into the story. The court values collegiality and privacy and when the shit hit the fan, she may have been forced to renounce her story. That's why NPR is standing by their "sources."

I suspect her source was someone who made it up for political reasons, and that NPR is standing by the report for political reasons.

This of course is why anonymous sources are so problematic. If someone was willing to put their own reputation on the line that would be one thing, but sniping from the shadows shouldn't be enabled by the. media.

Really I heard it was a scrabble to cover up for him. I totally understand Gorsuch doing this. It’s their thing …owning the libs.

+1 They’re literally drinking their own wee, to “own” us. Gorsuch might be a sight more educated than the people doing that, but he’s got the exact same motivation.

The bottom line is, did Gorsuch mask up after Roberts asked him to? If the answer is anything other than "yes" then Gorsuch is a d!ck.

Roberts cares more about the legacy of his court than about truth. He doesn’t want his court tainted with this kind of nonsense.

OMG, this is ridiculous, stupid troll, didn’t you read what Roberts stated that he DIDN’T ask? See 18:00 post.

The bottom line is ..... did this story even happen?
The answer is no, it didn't. As evidenced by the statements of 3 of the Justices.

And, an even broader question..... according to Totenberg's piece, there is dysfunction on SCOTUS. Given that her account of this part of her story has been debunked, can we believe the rest of the story?
I think not. I am betting things go much more smoothly with SCOTUS than Totenberg would like people to believe.

If you read this and look at the decisions (up until July, 2021), seems they agree more than they disagree.

The court’s decisions are not the full record of its functioning. There are thousands of cases they don’t take, bad appeals decisions they let stand because they know they can’t touch them with a 10-foot pole. And again, when you know your credibility as an institution is nearly shot and your credibility is all you have, you might be inclined to take a public face that is a complete charade and fraud.
