I’m a mommy who did this. First R vote ever. An good. After t*ts how last year, FCPS proved they should not have a monopoly or free education. If there had been charters and vouchers, FCPS would have had to open— or become defunct. Nothing wrong with making the, compete for students with the private sector.

Bring on charters, vouchers, magnets, smaller more specialized HSs, etc.

Study after study shows these don't work.

By the end of this decade the only schools that will be providing a high quality education will be elite private/boarding schools and small public schools in mastered planned and wealthy neighborhoods.

People really don't know the totality of what their asking for.

Yes, yes - only the all-knowing, omniscient YOU could possibly know the totality of what we're asking for. Only you! We bow to you.

Yup....I got a sick feeling when Trump won in 2016 and I have the same one about Youngkin.

The discourse around Trump and Youngkin is quite similar in that people refuse to acknowledge the hubris and incompetence of Clinton and McAulliffe, coincidentally friends and fellow travelers at the cutting edge of political corruption. A generic Democrat, like a Perriello, would have won. But why let that happen when you can try to skirt terms limit to hold power like Putin did with Medvedev. Of course this sounds a bit over the top but Notham is was McAuliffe’s hand picked successor. There’s a lot of parallels.

While she says expanding school choice is most important, more people might be inclined not to give up on our failing public schools if the first three measures were implemented. It's the hard drift to the far-left, large class sizes, and the neglect by school officials to pay attention to basic things like sound planning and facilities management (such a total debacle recently in both APS and FCPS, aided and abetted by corrupt School Boards) that are causing so many to look for alternatives.

Best post I've read on the topic yet.

Bulleted out just like GOP shill.

Eliminating certification? WTH?

Youngkin has shown us that vouchers are in play. Hopefully public school parents push back.

Thanks for the accolades. I’m the prior PP and was a long-time Democrat. Still support Biden but the local Democrats in NoVa are nuts. Keep calling us GOP shills and we’ll keep exploring other electoral options.

Did you vote for Youngkin?

Yes, but not for Sears, Miyares, or the R running for our VA House seat.

So you voted for Youngkin and you’re pushing GOP talking points.

Whether you’re getting paid or not you sound like a shill.

You are obviously a one-dimensional mouthpiece for the Virginia Democrats, so of course anyone exercising independent judgment is a “shill” in your book. Not surprised. It’s the only game your crowd knows how to play.

Thank you. These idiotic LWNJs have been throwing out their crazy opinions and unfounded prognostications of what a Youngkin administration will look like, but the reality is they have NO IDEA. Talk about shills and talking points. The only voucher Youngkin has actually mentioned is the one-time $500/student voucher to help mitigate Covid learning loss (tutors, etc). Nothing else has been formally proposed. They are Chicken Little blowhards whom no one should take seriously.

So much denial and deflection.

From a member of Youngkin’s very own education team - Lindsey Burke:
https://www.heritage.org/education/commentary/virginia-election-outcome-was-about-education-here-are-4-actions-youngkin
“Now is the time for Virginia to follow in the steps of its neighbor to the West and establish universal education savings accounts, as West Virginia did earlier this year. Every single child in Virginia, from the moment they begin kindergarten, should be able to choose the school or education provider that works for them and aligns with their values.”

Youngkin also brought on a top DeVos official - Nate Bailey:

Kay James - mega conservative/religious and also wants school choice

If the voters chose religious zealots who nevertheless believe boys aren’t girls and that lowering academic standards isn’t the path to excellence, maybe it’s time for the democrats to rethink their policies and messaging.

We are Arlington lefties and did not vote for Youngkin, but we highly value education. After one year of virtual school and the emphasis on societal changes rather than academics, we put our kids in a good private school. It means we cannot buy a bigger house and will severely limit savings. It is worth it to us but many people cannot do this. We ate finding it more difficult to champion public schools because the localities have the control rather than the State. Youngkin cannot make a dent in what is happening to what was nice a great school system in Arlington. They continue to make changes in the name of equity that will adversely affect kids of all races.

Understand about the voucher concerns, but there's probably nothing to worry about since Youngkin appears to be doing the old bait and switch to conservatives. Those education advisory names are probably just virtue signalling to conservatives. In reality, Youngkin has nominatted Aimee Guidera as his Secretary of Education. While Guidera is for charters, both her and the organization Guidera foudned (DQC) were part of the federal education coalition that strongly opposed federal vouchers. The last time the federal K-12 education bill was debated, Guidera strongly aligned with President Obama's education agenda and was most opposed to the pro-voucher elements within Congress. At the time, individuals such as Lindsey Burke were on the opposite side of Guidera on most education issues. If conservatives such as Burke had real influence, Guidera wouldn't have been chosen by Youngkin.

Youngkin seems to think she’s a school choice advocate:

Aimee will be a critical partner in restoring expectations of excellence; overseeing a record education budget to invest in teachers, facilities and special education; rolling out innovation lab and charter schools; and standing for a curriculum that prepares Virginia’s children for a dynamic future and removes politics from the classroom,” Youngkin said in a statement.

Guidera moved to Virginia in 1995 and her daughter attended Fairfax County Public Schools, Youngkin’s news release says.

“A nationally recognized leader, Aimee is deeply respected for her distinguished career advocating for innovation and choice, data-driven reform and high standards, and will apply these principles in order to implement the Day One Game Plan,” Youngkin said.

Sounds great to me.

“Innovation lab and charter schools” doesn’t sound that different from TJHSST and Karen Keys Gamarra’s plan for a social justice “leadership academy” at Lewis HS in FCPS.

So it seems this is all about power and control: as long as a school or initiative is championed by local Democrats, it’s not only acceptable, but laudable, but if Republicans or their appointees offer variations on the same theme it’s somehow a fundamental threat to education.

I am so sick of one party in NoVa trying to dictate everything that touches on public education. It’s not like you are running the schools efficiently, and you don’t try to keep D politicians like Obama and McAuliffe from sending their own kids to expensive privates, so just stand down for a while and let Youngkin’s team get settled and set forth their own proposals. This effort to deep six ideas before the new team has even taken office in Richmond just underscores that you’re not interested in kids or education, just maintaining power and total control of the public schools like a bunch of mob bosses.
