I’m a mommy who did this. First R vote ever. An good. After t*ts how last year, FCPS proved they should not have a monopoly or free education. If there had been charters and vouchers, FCPS would have had to open— or become defunct. Nothing wrong with making the, compete for students with the private sector.

Bring on charters, vouchers, magnets, smaller more specialized HSs, etc.

Stop with the equity at the center of it all nonsense. The primary job of a school system is education. That should be their #1, #2 and #3 priorities.

Renaming schools, changing admissions to 1 HS, equity dashboards, etc. should be way down the agenda of a school board.

Not a public school board. Public schools are required by law to responsive to all, not cater to upper middle class children of privilege who were born on third and whose parents think they hit a triple.

If you want the things you list, private school is a legitimate option.

As a taxpayer, I am far more concerned that the needs of the underserved are met first and foremost.

Quality schools focused on education are only for those whose parents can pay.
Everyone else gets name changes and lowered standards.

Yay.

Please, the worst HS in FCPS is leaps and bounds above the majority in the US. Ridiculous.

The worst high school in FCPS is MT Vernon which is among the worst on the state

I think the argument is that the worst high school in FCPS still offers more opportunities than most U.S. high schools. It's hard to argue, however, that somewhere between the bottom fourth and bottom third of high schools in FCPS aren't now in the bottom half of the state and nation in terms of student achievement. The FCPS School Board, controlled by Democrats for a long time, not only has allowed this to happen, but in many cases contributed to the decline of certain schools (for example, Annandale, Lewis, and Mount Vernon). The response of the Democrat-controlled School Board has been to try and make it harder to figure out which schools are struggling, and to promote the view that measuring achievement is itself racist.

My guess is that a VDOE under Youngkin isn't going to indulge these folks. They'll require more transparency, insist on more accountability and/or look for ways to make it easier for parents to avoid the schools that systems like FCPS don't fix.

But I don't think smaller, specialized schools or school vouchers are the answer. Look at the UK where this model exists - parents have to apply to multiple schools in the hopes that someone accepts their kid. Often, it is not in their neighborhood and parents drive 45 minutes + to get their child to school and sometimes even have to move houses to live within distance of the school that will accept their child. The government schools are terrible and even they don't have to accept a kid that lives in their neighborhood.

Fix FCPS - don't destroy it.

What makes you say FCPS isn’t working on learning loss? I think that is a ridiculous statement.

Excellent! Hope this is the case!

How has the school board made it harder to tell which schools are struggling? The website lists a whole bunch of information for each school. It doesn’t seem hidden.

Compared to the current clown car SB members, she is outstanding.

What I would give for a voucher! Then my child could get a proper education instead of this woke nonsense.

I’m another mommy for Youngkin. Best vote of my life for all the reasons the previous poster cited. Last year was a bridge too far.

Unfortunately, we've all seen what FCPS (and many other school systems) have become after years of left wing trigger words - and emphasis on social justice/equity rather than focusing on excellent academics for all. We can only go up from here, and I have every confidence a Youngkin-led VDOE will do just that.

I have no reason to lie about something so random.

The opposite of equity isn't education -- it's inequity. That's the platform.

Cynically speaking, the opposite of equity is a different person's perception of equity.
