Not sure if this should be in the policy forum instead... Anyone here voting for Youngkin because of

I am so done with all of these TEMPORARY issues, people.

I am voting for people who take climate change seriously.

I was never a single-issue voter before, but I am now. The lives of millions of human beings and other species are at stake in the long-run, due to water and food shortages in various parts of the world, which will lead to forced migration and conflict. We need action now.

You’re wrong here. It sends a very powerful message that on the local and National level there needs to be a course correction. I’m a Democrat voting for Youngkin in hopes that it sobers up the Democratic Party before 2024. Youngkin is a pretty bland and reasonable guy, and losing VA would be a sobering bucket of ice dumped on the Democratic party’s head.

And I have a bridge to sell you.

No. Absolutely.

I don’t understand why the “I don’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach” quote is so controversial. It was taken out of context. Youngkin’s TV commercial also says something about the FBI trying to silence parents and shows a quick snippet about protecting school boards from protestors. Some of the protests have been quite threatening and I don’t see how protecting members of school boards from protestors amounts to silencing parents.

Sometimes I forget that VA is the south and lots of racists live here. Thanks for reminding me.

I’m a hardcore Democrat and was planning to vote against Youngkin because I decided when Trump won that every Republican should be punished at the ballot box until he and his family are thoroughly renounced. At the same time, I’m the child of immigrants who believes in hard work and high standards. I am not a fan of relaxing academic standards in the name of equality.

Another troll trying to convince more parents to support glenn trumpkin. Stop it. You are not a "hard core Democrat".

I actually am! I hate Republican foreign policy and have only ever voted for Dems. I’m just increasingly pissed at the wokes I see on Twitter and a lot of the arguments made on the thread make sense to me.

Which “arguments”? The lies about “reducing standards”? Really?

OP here. Wow, this thread got nasty soon! I am not a troll or someone trying to drum up support for Youngkin. As I said, I have NEVER voted for any Republican in my life here or any conservative in my country of origin.

And yes, I do have children in FCPS.

Anyway, despite all the insults thrown back and forth here, it is clear to me that I'm not the only one going through the same dilemma - my husband is horrified I'm contemplating voting for Youngkin and, like a bunch of you, thinks I should vote with PS in mind at the local level.

Thanks to the people who pointed out the limitations of the governor over local schools policies. I will have to research this a bit because where I come from, curriculum and policies are decided at the Federal level and the same across the board. I confess I had never paid much attention about these things here until last year.

When all else fails, say racism.

Simple as pro-life or pro-choice. End of story for me. How can anyone tell you what you or your daughter can do with her body. F that noise. Will never vote otherwise.

I like some of the republican values but dislike many. I like some of the democratic values but dislike many. It will be a hard decision for me. I hate all the stupid FCPS social surveys, health ed topics, let kids choose their own gender pronouns and lowering the bar for underachievers to become achievers. I hate that everything in school is looked at from a racist lens. I hate that FCPS is not putting pressure on parents to do their part as parents rather than depend on the school to raise kids. So yes liberal FCPS getting a F from me. Will just that make me vote for Youngkin? Probably not because I am in a position to teach my kids what I want them to learn and opt out from the ones I think is stupid. Also I don't know of a republican school district that's better than FCPS.

Exactly this.

It’s a slippery slope in letting him in. It’s like opening a door to having all of our daughters to be traumatized in this state.

I agree with this.

I’m pretty sure Youngkin also sends his kids to private school. It’s a bit hypocritical on his part too.

But finally, I’m pretty sure I’m not a professional educator so I am going to let the pros do their job. If I think my kids need more help, I will add to it.

But I’m not an educator and telling them what to do in one of the best school systems in the country is Insanity.

NP. I used to be a one-issue voter - pro-life, period. No more. This is an important issue, but I've decided to stop limiting who I vote for based on this *one* issue. I now consider myself a pro-choice Republican and will be voting for Youngkin. Abortion isn't even figuring into my decision this time.

Oh, stop. We are not in any danger of "traumatizing our daughters." Quit the hyperbole.

Same. Parents already have plenty of a role in education -- lots of ways to participate and weigh in. Younkin wants those nuts screaming at school boards to make decisions for all kids and most of us are not okay with that.

See this terrifying article about what a Florida school board member endured: https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2021/10/20/jennifer-jenkins-brevard-school-board-masks-threats/

See this story about "Moms for Liberty" which is the type of parents Youngkin wants to put in charge of our kids' education: https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/moms-for-liberty-parents-rights/2021/10/14/bf3d9ccc-286a-11ec-8831-a31e7b3de188_story.html

Many of these "local" groups of parents are funded and organized by national right wing groups. I do not want right wing advocacy groups in charge of our schools.

Remember the transvaginal ultrasounds the republicans in VA tried to force on women?
