Not sure if this should be in the policy forum instead... Anyone here voting for Youngkin because of

I confess that I'm considering voting for Youngkin. It goes against (my) grain as I have NEVER voted for Republicans before. Also, he is pro-life, and I'm a staunch pro-choicer - it has been the MAIN issue to me since I began voting.

OTOH, I feel so mad and just pissed at a bunch of stuff FCPS has been doing (and others I have discovered due to pandemic and virtual school), that this sentiment is taking precedent on my mind right now.

However, when I try to take a step back to analyze things more critically, I'm scared voting for this guy (and assuming he wins), will maybe bring the school thing to what I consider best, but with a huge price to pay. Like VA becoming a next Texas or FL.

I'm so TORN!!!!! Public schools vs everything else!

Anyone else dealing with the same internal dilemma?

I think you're a TROLL. What I know for sure is that Youngkin is in a tight race and has seized on an issue that he hopes will propel him to a win--"parents' rights" and public schools.

I have more confidence in Youngkin to appoint people who will listen to parents. McAuliffe cares only about shoring up the support of groups like the FEA and Fairfax Pride for Democrats.

But why do the POC have to be bused all over the area to bring diversity to the schools? Why can't they implement those programs in those schools where they are now?

Exactly, things WERE and ARE so much better in Virginia. Go live someplace else for a while and you will beg to come back here.

Then why are our rankings so low? Especially for teacher pay?

If you have a problem with being 12th in the nation, move to one of the other 11 states. People can move. Everyone is always posting on how FCPS has ruined their families and kids (so dramatic). Then quit your job and move. You staying here is complacency. No one is living here against their will. Go online find a new job and a new house, millions of people do it daily. And teacher pay, it’s not bad. I make about 15,000-20,000 more than my friends in other states. (parent of a SN kid and a teacher)

But do those areas have a similar cost of living to Nova?

I’m voting for youngkin to stop ridiculous quarantine. The only way to get fchd to move is if vdh tells them to.

I guess you don't know any teachers, and how stressful it was for them to pivot through the constant changes. The move to teach virtually then concurrent. They also took a lot of blame whenever things went wrong, even if it was out of their control. Many have quit and taken a leave of absence.

Serious question: What's your job? I'm the PP and I'm a Cat B IA in FCPS who went back last October before anyone was vaccinated. We had students with mask exemptions in our classroom. It was very challenging and the only thing that would've made it worse for everyone would have been hundreds of other unvaccinated people walking around in the school at the same time when positivity rates were hovering around 10% and cases were over 200/100,000. I also have a child with special needs. They did the right thing pulling us back out when cases got too high for many reasons, but mainly because staff members were getting sick and there was no one to cover. They also knew they'd be dealing with an even worse shortage than they already are if they said Screw It and expected people to keep working as cases soared. FCPS doesn't pay anyone who works in Special Ed enough but at least they did do something to get the most needy students back first and kept the buildings almost empty to protect those students and those of us who had to work under the circumstances. I don't blame the teachers and staff who didn't come back but voting for Youngkin is not going to help any parent of a SN child or those of us who work with these students.

x1 million

- parent of kid with SN and sees how extra challenging the last 1.5 years has been on SN teachers

The woke crowd with which McAuliffe surrounds himself (to win, not because he actually cares about them) has a broad view of "access." It's not enough that schools that are majority POC also offer advanced classes; they'll insist that schools need to be rezoned or classes need to be tailored until the percentage of POC enrolled in those classes and getting the same test scores is the same as the percentage of white/Asian kids. And if that doesn't happen they'll then push for those classes and tests to be eliminated or for all classes to be deemed "advanced" so they can say there is equal "access." They want equal outcomes, not equal opportunities.

I have to admit this thread is making me reconsider voting for McAuliffe. I’m a hardcore Democrat and was planning to vote against Youngkin because I decided when Trump won that every Republican should be punished at the ballot box until he and his family are thoroughly renounced. At the same time, I’m the child of immigrants who believes in hard work and high standards. I am not a fan of relaxing academic standards in the name of equality.

I actually am! I hate Republican foreign policy and have only ever voted for Dems. I’m just increasingly pissed at the wokes I see on Twitter and a lot of the arguments made on the thread make sense to me.

Having said that, I will still probably end up voting for McAuliffe because of vaccine mandate and I’m still not over Trump.

Do you have kids in Virginia public schools?

I’m voting for yougkin and part of it is because of schools. I am sick of all this equity crap and race to the bottom.

Really hate the word woke.
