Not sure if this should be in the policy forum instead... Anyone here voting for Youngkin because of

Vote Republican for SB members. But a Republican Governor isn’t going to have a huge impact on local school district decisions.

Youngkin=trump so definitely not voting for him. The FCPS mess will not be fixed by a republican governor. FCPS has been protected by both parties for years and it is a disgrace but youngkin will not fix that.

Perhaps. But he could at least get rid of Northam’s K-12 mask mandate and let that be a local decision.

To those who think that the gubanatorial race is the one to make a statement about school boards, please reconsider.

Look at the number of school districts in Florida where school board members and superintendents are willing to forgo their salaries in order to enact and enforce mask mandates contrary to DeSantis' directives. Look at the school districts in Texas that are willing to do the same with Abbot's directives. Look around the nation and you'll see how little influence the governor actually has on the school policies.

If you want to say "F you" about school politics, policies and organization, you need to do that when you vote for school board members, not governor, lt governor and AG.

Yes-!tired of the craziness. Don’t think he will win but it will be a sign to the mod Ds to get their house in order.

PP here - I should acknowledge that I am a swing voter but tend to vote D locally.

Anonymous wrote:FCPS? Be it for the way they handled Covid last year, or TJ, or AAP, or Advanced Math, or critical race, or whatever is your poison. Has anyone here been considering (or set to) vote Republican sole for school issues (real or perceived)?

I confess that I'm considering voting for Youngkin. It goes against (my) grain as I have NEVER voted for Republicans before. Also, he is pro-life, and I'm a staunch pro-choicer - it has been the MAIN issue to me since I began voting.

OTOH, I feel so mad and just pissed at a bunch of stuff FCPS has been doing (and others I have discovered due to pandemic and virtual school), that this sentiment is taking precedent on my mind right now.

However, when I try to take a step back to analyze things more critically, I'm scared voting for this guy (and assuming he wins), will maybe bring the school thing to what I consider best, but with a huge price to pay. Like VA becoming a next Texas or FL.

I'm so TORN!!!!! Public schools vs everything else!

Anyone else dealing with the same internal dilemma?

Yes, absolutely. And if you can vote for a conservative delegate, do it! I recommend Brenton Hammond if you’re in the 43rd district. He’s a black conservative who wants honest history of racism taught, but not CRT.

They can set state policy for the entire state. And look at the Virginia Math Pathways Initiative. It will affect all districts. It needs to be stopped.

For everyone saying the Governor has no impact on schools. Of course he does. VMPI and other “equity” based initiatives come from the Sec of Education, appointed by the Governor.

Governor can insist on vaccine and mask mandates. Governor can work with TJ admissions standards it being a Governor’s School).

Teacher pay and benefits. Teacher collective bargaining.

At least be honest. The Governor influences education a lot.

No. I’m a moderate who sometimes votes R, am not happy at the way FCPS has handled a number of issues, but am not voting for Youngkin. I WILL be hoping/campaigning for any SB candidate I think can stop the echo chamber and is sane (no, not you Elizabeth Schultz). We need a better Health Department head, a better superintendent, a more moderate school board, and a Board of Supervisors ready to clean house. None of those things can be fixed by the Governor. I don’t think the answer to our issues is to elect someone with zero experience working with the legislature/Department of Education.

This. I'm a staunch Democrat, but I voted for the Republican running for School Board because he had more experience and I liked the decisions he had made in the past. I think if we had a more balanced school board we wouldn't be on Fox News every night.

The original post reads like outreach to people who don’t really understand how governments work — to allow them to feel better about voting for a really noxious candidate. “Oh, but it was for the schools, the children!” they will say, brimming with sincerity, not realizing, or more likely, not caring that their particular concerns have little to do with the governor at all. “For the children”, though, just sounds so much more palatable than “for Trumpism, spurious ‘culture wars’ and white supremacy.”

He won’t make schools better. But some people think the governor controls schools, so….

Sends a message though

voting for Youngkin is a vote for

290 days ago terrorists ransacked the US Capitol and *hours later* 138-of-202 (68%) House republicans voted to make trump a dictator. They tried to finish the rioters’ job and end democracy. Never forget it.
