I went to an elite college, but it really bugs me when people and especially moms think a particular college is a validation of their self worth. Or the college of their children as a validation of their success as a parent. College is a means to an end. It is not the end. It isn't a status symbol. It isn't a country club. You can get a great education and get access to a lot of opportunities at a school like JMU if you seek them out and apply yourself. Or you can get a community college level education if you want. Elite schools are the same way. Yes, they can lead to great opportunities. They are also full of wasted potential riding the wave of grade inflation and lack of ambition or work ethic. Being an elite athlete at an elite sports program at a college isn't going to lead to a terrible career for a smart, ambitious person with a strong work ethic.

| This^ is the sort of rational post that simply cannot be tolerated on DCUM Lacrosse |
+1 I was one of those "elite" athletes at JMU in the 90s. I have a great job, nice life, two awesome kids--one who is at a college that is considered a "Top 20," though I would have been just as happy, if not happier, if she went to JMU. But with all the pressure around here and the derision aimed at JMU in particular, it was never going to happen. It's a shame. To those of you with lacrosse players looking at JMU, don't let these people get you down. Frankly, if I had the choice to play at JMU or Michigan, I'd take JMU any day. It's a great lacrosse program at a school that opens many doors. |
While I'm a big supporter and proponent of JMU and all it has to offer. You are comparing apples to oranges here. Is the JMU lax program better right now, yes of course. However, from an overall experience, and job recruiting, it's not close. Both are good school and depending on what you want out of things, both are good choices. But going to a place like Michigan is on a different level (even if their lax program right now is not as good). |
| The question is always whether the school passes the torn ACL test. Is it truly a school the student would pick if he/she couldn’t play lacrosse? The answer is, of course, going to be student specific. |
Yeah, it is why some kids never commit - they don’t receive an offer from a school they want to go to. Doesn’t matter if 50 others schools expressed interest or offered them a spot, if the school wasn’t on their list, they said no. |
| Come on jmu is a strong girls lax program and a respectable enough school but it’s not on the same level as a Michigan in the real world. Other schools on that list don’t even get that. It’s fine to act all kumbayah when kids choose a school but you gotta be realistic. School stats and rankings are out there for a reason - people follow that stuff and believe in it. Take a look at the threads in the college section. People are brutal about schools. |
| This tharead is so terrible. Get a life better the parent complaining went to an absolute ball buster of a college themselves. Sure they want their kid going Ivy because they have never accomplished anything in their life or went to a pretty bad college |
| What a bunch of snowflakes. Rowing, golf, squash and lacrosse were always upper class sports used to go to prestigious universities. |

And this is exactly what's going on with the Michigan dad on here. It's a great school, but not worthy of the defense he keeps coming on here to make, trashing those who make other choices. |
I disagree, I’ve seen a lot of kids pick a mid range school they never would have considered otherwise because they want to be a lax recruit. It doesn’t always end well. |
It goes both ways and you would be surprised at the number of girls that turn schools down. There just is no clear "data" because you don't see them post about it like a commit does. Some realize early on they don't want to just pick a school because they want to play lacrosse if the schools they are looking at don't reach out and are content with club. I did it and it worked out. Some turn down lower-level D1 because it isn't a fit and go D3 instead. Some just go club. Others are lacrosse or bust. And you are right, it doesn't always end well. |
| Was there a lot of recruiting action at the Dallas tournament this weekend? I think it was 23 and 24 teams with a few 22 showcase teams? |
|
At Presidents Cup Pride 23 only lost to Cap 23 by 3, with Cap
23 pretty much all committed and Pride 23 with very few. Very clear there is a poor recruiting structure for Pride. |
| Agree on the recruiting failure, but not sure if that was Capital’s best game and Pride definitely played inspired given the recruiting differentials. Cap also blew out 2 teams that beat Pride. |
