2 for sure |
5-1 times 2 halves = 10-2. That would be pretty dominant, no? |
Teams win not individuals. No one remembers individual accolades. They remember championships. Great that girls get noticed for their individual accomplishments but the team concept is what matters. The best teams are in their respective places. Role players are just as important in the goal to win. Complete teams will rise and have risen to the top of their respective regions. |
Not a warrior but a Warhawk. Roughly 50 out of the 150 pages on this thread are dedicated to discussing/hyping C'ville. As much digital ink as 17-1 Oakton, if not more. I think it's accurate to say it's not warranted. Let's compare resumes with Madison. One team has lost 7 out of 11 in the back half of the season. They had a losing record in Districts. They lost every big game they played (Robinson, Battlefield, South Lakes, Madison, Oakton x 3) except for a win against a 2nd seed from the Liberty district in the first round of regionals. Yet they remain the topic of the day even after they are done... The other team beat Robinson, South Lakes, Centerville, and went 1-1 against the 17-1 Oakton Cougars, including beating them in the District Championship. Their losses are to Oakton, two strong privates, and a meaningless final regular season game against a well-coached Westfield. That's a hype-worthy resume as the Regional final approaches. Which team had the better year? Heck, we could do the same comparison with South Lakes, or Battlefield, or Robinson. No disrespect to a nice team and program with some great players in Centreville. I'm just saying that the hype has been totally disproportionate to the performance. And better teams are ignored in the conversation. |
Joining this group in the AAC will be two area players attending USF. A middie from South County who is also an All American track and field athlete. She can really get up and down the field. The other is a lethal attacker and finisher at Riverside. The AAC will be well represented by the DMV. |
It was a two goal game, tied with 10 minutes left. Isn’t that a good, competitive game? Any other Madison fans as worried as I was in the first half? I loved our girls resiliency for battling back. A great win against a scrappy, young Yorktown team. We made better adjustments and played better defense in the second half - our offense looked real good in both half's (we passed on some shots right in front of the goal while running our spread that would have generated a few more goals but given YT an opportunity to get the draw). I loved it but don’t want to discredit those young girls who fought their hearts out against us last night. Great job Patriots. On to Oakton! |
Said by every parent who's kid has never won an award... The teams that have more role players are more successful and championships are great, but don’t try and take away from the awards that were earned and voted on by the coaches in the respective district or region. If your mad your kid didn't get an award then your coach probably didn't fight for them or didn't even put them up... |
This has been Centreville's weakness relying on 3 girls to try to win games. The coaches refusal to sub players left them gassed where they couldn't have any fast breaks because the middy's had nothing left in the tank. Sitting close to their bench last night their coach had nothing positive to say to motive the girls, she just tore them down. |
What a great night of lacrosse in Fairfax yesterday. My daughter (who did not play for any of the teams we watched last night) was home from college and I made her come with me to watch this double-header. I miss these games! As much as we try, the parents cannot replicate this in college. Girls going all out in front of their classmates and families, moms and dads apoplectic when their daughter is shoved a little (even if their daughter may, possibly flopped a bit), and the DC Urban Moms lacrosse thread!
If I was doing a halftime show for VHSL girls tournament lacrosse, these would have been my stories. 1) DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE – all four teams, Centreville, Madison, Oakton, and Yorktown had awesome defenses. All four were very physical and quick to help. Every goal by every team was well earned! My daughter is a defender, and I could see a lot of girls tonight moving on to the next level as defenders. Also helps that all four teams were anchored by solid goaltending – every goalie I saw made at least two incredible saves. 2) D1 Commits are legit! JMU, Pitt, ODU, Cincinnati, Rhode Island (and anyone I missed) are getting some good players. All play hard, attack lose balls, and are smart. The difference in both games was a Senior D1 Commit, JMU for Oakton and Cincy for Madison. Their teams followed their lead. Extra kudos to Madison because #9 literally put the team on her shoulders and got them back into it in the second half. Looked like a bunch of great sophomores according to my program and I’m sure they are going to find great homes as well. 3) Coaches need to watch some college ball. First of all, great high school coaching happened out there. They all must run great programs because all four teams had well-run offenses (Oakton’s offense was so, so, so patient – a masterclass!) and solid D. However, face-guarding took one great player out in one game and another team executed a nearly 7-minute stall. There are adjustments that coaches can make to counter those tactics – if they are practiced. Until we get smart and get a shot clock, there is going to be more stalling. 4) Favorite subplot of the night: Madison #9 vs Yorktown #33. Those two went at it like heavyweight fighters except it wasn’t puncher on puncher but shooter on goalie! As I said earlier, all the goalies played great and made some big-time saves but Yorktown’s was on another level. She made a crazy Dominic Hasek, kick save while in a split against an absolute rocket from #9. I think she had like 15 total saves! But that doesn’t mean #33 had #9’s number, not by a long shot! She had the hardest shot I think I’ve ever seen in a high school game for one of her goals in the first half. Wow! She must have led her team in scoring on a team with great scorers. Great job to both girls! 5) Refs – there is no answer. One thing I’m sure everyone can agree on, the refs screwed your team. I completely understand why all four teams’ fans thought the refs were on the other team’s side. There is no rhyme or reason, let alone consistency. I think the Oakton/Centerville was a little better refereed but even there I wasn’t sure what was going on. They let them play in the first half and someone must have told them they hadn’t reached their monthly speeding ticket quota so they started pulling over everyone in the second half! We need to pay refs more money to try and get better people off the street, get them better training, US Lacrosse needs to provide better guidance on the rules so it is easier for them to understand if it is a foul or it is not, and they should get grades for accountability. Each team had at least one no-call where their girl got mauled and one enormous head-scratcher where the parents around me were trying to decipher what had even happened. 6) Vienna Inn, like posting on DC Urban Moms, the Vienna Inn is still one of my favorite guilty pleasures. Got to be honest, might have ducked out with 5 minutes left to go hit one of my favs! My wife will not go there with me and, after a lacrosse season with no drinking for my daughter, I paid her for joining me on my nostalgic high school lacrosse night with a couple of beers at the old Vienna Inn. I just need someone to answer one question, why is everyone’s parking lot in downtown Vienna look pristine but the Vienna Inn’s looks like it was just mortared? Thank you for reading. See you in Oakton on Friday! |
No because that’s not what happened. Final score was 11-9 |
Both Madison and Oakton move onto States though.. correct? |
Correct |
Yup! |
Nice! Both earned it. |
