| If a friend offers you hand-me-down clothes for your new baby, do you see this as an unwanted imposition to which you are obligated to say yes, or do you really want the clothes? I have a pregnant friend (we aren't that close, though), and I can't tell whether she really wants my DCs' baby clothes that I offered, or just felt bad saying no. When I was pregnant, I was delighted to receive hand-me-downs, but I don't know if this is the norm. TIA. |
| I love getting handmedowns |
| I'm pretty straightforward about it. "I have a bag of clothes that I'm happy to share with you, but if you have enough or are overwhelmed with other hand-me-downs, just let me know and I'll donate them instead!" |
| I love hand-me-downs if they are without condition. If I feel like I'm going to need to remember what came from whom and give it back, it's more stressful than it's worth. So if you offer them and say, just pass on or donate whatever you don't want or when you are done--awesome. If you say, I'd love to lend you some of my favorite baby outfits--no thanks. |
| it depends if I have to give them back. If you want them back you can keep them. |
| No, I wouldn't be thrilled with hand me downs. If you don't want them back though, no biggie. She can always donate them if they look old and worn out. |
| I thank God for hand me downs!! My friends have given me some great stuff. I have to say my DD wears hand me downs 50% of the time. |
| OP here. Thanks for the input. The clothes are in great to excellent condition. My DCs are only 2.5 and 9 months, so the clothes aren't that old, and are not worn out. I did tell her that I would not expect the clothes returned to me. Hmm...I don't know if I should follow up and say something like what a PP suggested ("if you have enough or are overwhelmed with other hand-me-downs, just let me know and I'll donate them instead"), or just not say anything....and if she wanted the clothes, maybe she would bring it up again. |
| I absolutely LOVE hand me downs especially if they are in good condition. Who wouldn't?? |
| I hate hand me downs. I do not want someone's used clothes for myself or my child even if it is in great condition. Of course, I would probably nicely accept them because I would feel bad and then donate them |
|
I would never accept them if I didn't want them. It is easy enough to say, wow, we have so many clothes right now! Thanks anyway.
That being said, I got two huge bins of clothes and am thrilled that I will likely not have to buy anything until new baby hits 18 month size. Of course, this is my second child, we have gone from two incomes to one and had unexpected expenses this year that wiped out our savings. So bring on the hand me downs! |
| I LOVE hand me downs. My son blew through the 0-3, 3-6, and 6 month sets. Blew through them. I would have kicked myself if I had to buy new damn clothes for every one of those. |
| I love hand me downs, but I have no problem politely saying that I was all set with clothes if I don't need or want them. |
Every clothing item your baby wears is brand new? |
Yes, it is. It is not expensive at all though, mainly target. I just do not feel comfortable putting someone elses socks or shirts on my child. I do not look down on anyone that likes or needs handmedowns, but they just aren't for me |
