Before the DB debacle round deux, people suggested that team is staying with McLean. FVU sounds like a complete disaster with the continued risk of losing their badge. That said, I’m not sure why you would switch over there at this point vs letting the next few years play out. My hunch is FVU takes a few players from Valor and the rest are a mostly crew of kids from other clubs. And Yes, this team will not be competitive in ECNL for a variety of reasons. The only thing that may change all of this is a really strong coach, which seems unlikely given all of the recent antics.

Do you think ECNL takes away their badge with them being only one of three options in the area? And one of the other optionshas possibly been considering GA?

Will VDA and Arlington be strong at 2014? Based on track records, VDA will not be and Arlington doesn’t seem particularly strong either.

The McLean 2014’s are not the same quality as the 2013 McLean group that went to FVU. I think they would need to combine with other kids in ffx county to be competitive and I don’t think many from the outside will look to go to McLean. They are no longer a destination club.
Looking at the Arlington VSA game from the fall, they tied and PWSI is getting stronger based on their trend. It will take VDA to zip the pieces together between the two clubs as with any team bringing together players vs a team that has been playing together since u9, but I am not sure it is fair to assume Arlington will outplay VDA. Also, who knows what the SY change will do to all of these teams.

ok and what about field space for practice and a responsive punctual front office. What commitments do they have. That coach is an awesome addition but how does the overall package compare?

Bandaid is a bandaid. They have a lot to fix.

No question they have a lot to fix but two years straight of major changes have been tough.

If you’re coming from McLean and you are evaluating coaching assignments, do you really believe the McLean AGD, that will most certainly be the u13 coach, is a better option than whoever Union chooses? I think Union could choose DB again and it would still be a better option.

Yes, of course. Union is recurring drama (for years, not just the last month) and offers little in terms of stability. Since college recruiting doesn't happen at u13 or u14, why would a family choose chaos over a coach that has a great local reputation (though not a regional/national reputation)? Would a 2014 parent look at the DB situation with the 2013 Union team and say 'yeah, i want more of that!!'? And even at the older ages, where is the stability and confidence that Union is trending in the right direction? CW is great, but he's not coaching every team and who knows when he'll retire.

I know Valor dad is excited about Union, but I haven't heard parents from other Union feeder clubs (in person or on this forum) that are excited about Union in terms of being a long-term destination. And if you were on MYS and wanted to get on a "better" team at the 2014 age group, your options are either Arlington (probably the best team in the area) or Loudoun. VDA might be a good long-term option, but they're not that strong right now... Those options seem much more obvious than taking a risk with Union.

CW coaches the 2013's and they are currently undefeated in league play. Which coach at Mclean has the great local reputation? If you are referring to MN, you must be joking. The Arlington 11's and to a lesser extent the 12's are an anomaly for the club, the rest of the teams are mediocre. Yes, they are stable but also perfectly happy being mediocre. Going to VDA now makes no sense unless the player would be the top player of the team. Athletes and recruits will replace them over time.

At the end of the day, go to the team that you feel like will develop your kid the best. It's a year to year contract.

No one's as good as the (former) MYS 2013s, so that's an odd comparison. But the 2014 and 2015 girls teams along with the 2016 boys teams are definitely attracting local talent. So clearly some outside families are looking at MYS as a destination club for these age groups. Long-term, that's probably a good sign for the girls side but unclear on the boys side since they don't have top MLS option.

They do not do so well against GA Teams

No one is as good as the former MYS 2013's because much of that team was recruited. Maybe the younger groups have some outside players, but the quality is not the same as before. To be fair, most clubs cannot recruit like that in this environment where every neighborhood has a pathway to something.

But the ECNL clubs are proving to still be the main consolidators of top talent. People said the 2011's may choose one or the other but that the 2012's would be the start of the GA revolution. Top players from 2011's all chose ECNL. The 2012's players from NVA and Alexandria have begun their migration over and it sounds like the SYC players will do the same for next year. The best group of 2013's already chose ECNL and I imagine players from the GA teams will also begin to migrate. The GA revolution was alive for a brief moment only in the minds of parents with u-littles who are going through this for the first time.

Does FVU have issues with field space? Tell us more.

Of course they have field space issues, that's part of the reason they grabbed all of those feeder clubs. The want to leech off whatever field space they can milk out of them, and maybe hopefully find a diamond in the rough player while dangling ECNL as a carrot to those clubs

Nope, not our experience. No issues with field space.

They use Robinson HS. 4-5 teams share one soccer field space at the same time.

yes there are few talented kids in 2014. but overall 2014 in this area is not as generally talented as 2013 or upcoming 2015 girls. BUT with age group changes, things can really different.

Only 2 teams on the field at the same time at Robinson and plenty of space…not sure where you are getting your info from.
