In my state (midwest), masks were required in all of major counties starting around the 4th of July. The masks are working- our new case rate plateaued and is now declining.

Excellent.

Montgomery County has been decreasing and hovering right around 3% for at least a week now. Testing levels have been increasing and so have case numbers but the overall percent positive rate has not. Crossing my fingers...

New study out today that shows 35% of people who did not have Covid-19 had T-cell reactions to covid, almost certainly a cross-immunity from other coronaviruses.

Russia is set to approve a vaccine in the next couple of weeks. I'm sure there's a great deal of skepticism, and it's something that would probably never reach our shores. But it's a "swing for the fences" development. If it proves to be moderately effective and numbers are driven down, it will generate a ton of positive press for vaccines and set the stage for the other vaccines coming online later this year. Conversely, it could be a big swing and miss that fuels the anti-vaccine movement. However, the risk of that will be somewhat mitigated that it's Russia, released a half-year in front of everybody else, etc. I'm really rooting that this works for them.

So am I. If nothing else it would relieve suffering in Russia and show us that a vaccine can be achieved.

The Fairfax Health District shows 7 new cases over the last day. I follow the test positive 7 day averages and typically not the case count, but barring some reason yet to be announced any time there is a single digit number of cases it should be a positive thing, right?

Did I read correctly in that Russia has BARELY tested this vaccine on people? what could go wrong?

The FDA said Wednesday that they will likely grant emergency use authorization to a COVID 19 vaccine within a matter of weeks. Whether you think this is good news or not I realize may depend.

BTTT.

Head of Operation Warp Speed came out and said he expects the vaccine to have efficacy in the 90% range. I was blown away by that comment and made me think they’ve already determined who the front runner is. Regardless, this is great if it holds for phase 3 trials.
