It's Harris. The safe pick.
But it should be Michelle Obama. |
That doesn't seem to match what I've read. John McCain Jr (his father) was a naval officer stationed at the Panama Canal zone in 1936 when McCain III (senator and later POTUS candidate) was born. At the time, the Panama Canal was still a US Territory, so it counted as US soil. In fact, he was born in the Naval hospital there which was definitely considered US soil. There is no record of McCain Jr's break in service in 1936. McCain Jr was stationed at a submarine facility near the canal zone at the time of McCain III's birth. https://archive.nytimes.com/www.nytimes.com/books/first/t/timberg-mccain.html

Iirc he was a private contractor at the time. This not official USG. |
Despite all of your whining, the best candidate for VP has always been Kamala Harris. I'm super excited for this ticket. |
Also I don't think he was born on base. That hospital didn't exist in 1936. iirc he was born at a civilian hospital in a city near the base.
I only remember all this because I was always struck at how insane the Obama northern arguments were when McCain had a much more tenuous "natural born" claim. |
Regardless of whether his father was in the service or not, both of his parents were US citizens and the Panama Canal zone at that time was US territory, so he was born to two US citizens who were living on US soil. |
I would love it if he chose Larry Hogan. |

Except that the difference between being born on base or off, in this case, is the difference between in zone or not in zone. Regardless, it's all just an academic exercise. He stood for election and won uncontested electoral college votes. That act in itself implies that it was ok and that "natural born" has been defined as ciizen at birth instead of something more specific. Either way, because Duckworth's dad was officially stationed overseas at the time of her birth she is good to go even without the McCain precedent. |
Not really. Even if he worked outside the zone, they lived in the zone. As long as they lived in the US territory, they're covered: https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/8/1401

That's the definition of a citizen in general. Not a "natural born" citizen under the presidential eligibility clauses. |
Harris is an awful pick. Let’s hope it’s someone with more experience and who can lead as well as articulate a policy position. |
+1 Bass, Lujan-Grisham, Duckworth, Warren, or Baldwin would be fantastic. I think the white women are less likely picks, but some awesome WOC possibilities. |
I live in New Mexico, and I love Michelle Lujan Grisham. I identify as completely Caucasian (English roots) so maybe I'm not the right person to ask, but her ancestry is Spanish -- the Lujan history in New Mexico goes back 400 years to the Conquistadors. Can I just ask Latinx DCUMers how they feel about her being presented as "Hispanic"? She seems more Euro-American than me (my ancestors only came from Wales in the 1700s). I'm just curious. Again, I would vote for a Biden/Grisham ticket with gusto -- just wondering about who qualifies as "not white" these days. |
While my pick is Duckworth- genuine, humble, served and serving her country, kind....I have a lot of respect for Kamala Harris. I just rewatched her questioning of William Barr, May 1, 2019. She’s asking him if the WH wanted him to investigate anyone. When I watched it at the time, I thought she seemed almost rude. Knowing more about Barr now, I see that she was not allowing him to run the encounter. She throws him off his game repeatedly. She’s a steely and talented interrogator. Props to Ms. Harris. |
