Do you know any wealthy people who actually drive low-key cheap cars?

They have no other cars?

There is no luxury minivan. For people who want the practicality of a van, their choices are fairly limited.
Not sure what dad currently drives, but the teenage son (17) drives his hand-me-down 2013 Camry. They're low-key people all around. super down to earth and seem to keep their kids grounded. Their (gorgeous) house is lived in. Not messy, but the expected amount of clutter for a large family while still being a really nice house. I think that they just like to be practival all around. Could they have fit their kids and sports equipment in the back seat of an X7? Sure, but flash just isn't their thing.

I don't know, I see a lot of the larger full size SUVs being driven by rich housewives. These cars can be quite luxurious inside but is not attention catching on the outside. Only the in-crowd knows that they are expensive. They are much more low-key than a Range Rover or G Wagon.

Ironically, the Catholic schools seem to be rife with these gas guzzling monstrosities. I suppose none of those good Catholics took Laudato Si very seriously.

Judgmental much? That's because they have large families and a lot of kids to cart around. Plus they are paying for Catholic School. Cars come low on the list for them.

I make observations and, yes, given our climate crisis we should all be making better choices about what we drive. A minivan can hold 8 people. I don't know any families even at Catholic schools that have 6 kids. Most have two or three. A few have four. A minivan's gas mileage is twice as good as a suburban. FYI.

Interesting how you don't say anything about the politicians getting carted around alone or with a single staffer in black Suburbans get a pass.

I'm not just a schmuck who pretends moneyed class are driving old beaters or that all the folks in $75k cars are over-extended ( ). Rich couldn't care less about an $800 to 1300 month lease payment. To the average surgeon, that's all of 15 minutes of work. To a business owner, it's not even a blip on the books. To an executive, it's probably paid by the company with a car stipend. Most rich wouldn't be caught dead in something old, cheap and plastic. And I'm not just talking about showy rich either. Rich, in general. Even the "low-key" rich no-makeup SAHM with a BA from Trinity who wears sneakers and Patagonia everywhere typically drives a new Tesla, Audi Q7 or GLS Mercedes...or loaded Tahoe or Volvo XC90 at the lower-end.

You are absolutely wrong. Most rich people DO care about throwing their money away on a leased car. That’s how some people get rich - by not wasting their money. Most rich people aren’t driving clunkers but a number of them are driving more middle of the road cars like mini vans, Toyotas, Subarus, Hondas. We have a lot of money but that doesn’t mean we just throw it away frivolously. I drive a Toyota and refuse to spend more on a car. My husband wanted a Tesla, he paid cash.

LOL. Suburbans are ridiculously flashy because they guzzle gas to no end and take up huge amounts of space on the road. Not the example I would give of a non-flashy car.

I don’t think the folks here agree.

The thrill of the thread is asking if any rich people actually drove "low-key cheap cars." I don't think the Suburban fits that under any definition

And the dad version of this is the extended cab F150s, Silverados and Rams. Those things are 70,000 and marketed as family haulers

Yep Mackenzie Bezos drives a Honda Odyssey. She’s loaded but she’s also a single mom of four.

I’d call Kias cheap. Do rich people drive Kias?

+1

I would still drive a Honda/Toyota, etc. even if I was loaded because these brands LAST.

And I agree that Kias are the cheapest cars on the roads.
They basically scream out “I wish I had the means for a better brand - but this is all I can afford!”

She probably has multiple cars.

This is a myth perpetuated by delusional strivers. It makes them feel better about driving a depressing piece of junk to pretend all nice cars are driven by stupid overextended broke people and all modest cars are driven by smart rich people. It’s hilariously sad. Just admit you can’t afford nice wheels. Jeez.

Some stealth wealth drive late model Toyota Prius, Mini Cooper and Subaru. But multi millionaires driving 20 year old clunkers is total make believe.

No. I know plenty of wealthy families who do not drive fancy cars, especially old money. They pay in cash and keep the car until it dies. But when they do buy it, it's a BMW or Mercedes. So older models.
