Do you know any wealthy people who actually drive low-key cheap cars?

Anonymous
We do not. Wondering where this WASP myth that "actual" rich people drive old Volvos and Subarus comes from? Nearly every genuinely rich couple we know drives new, frequently traded in luxury cars and SUVs. New fully loaded Jeep Grand Cherokees, Tahoes and Yukons are also common. The cheapest cars would be like a new 2020 Mini Cooper and the new little Tesla Model 3. Literally nobody rich we know is daily driving some clunker. Is this myth just a coping technique by less affluent driving humble autos?

What net worth do you consider rich?

Us.

Honda Civic, Subaru, Honda CRV, Toyota Rav 4, and we keep them til they basically die.

Annual income more than million plus yearly.

I think they have way more money than I initially thought they did. They are financially smart and probably were raised that way.

The oldest car I have driven in a very long time was a loaner on Nantucket. It was an old metal Ford suv that was falling apart. Every light on the dashboard was on. The owner is the father of my friend. They are loaded. This is what he uses every day year round. I borrowed it to run to the store as it was the last one in the driveway. I thought it was going to die the whole time.

Jeep Grand Cherokees are trash. No self respecting wealthy person would drive one. Not. A. Single. One.

$10M net worth - we drive 2 Honda Pilots (2018 and 2006). We could care less about cars. We are in a lower cost city and do have a $1M+ 6,000 sf house though

I’ve seen Robert Mueller drive his Subaru Forester around DC. He gets his haircut in my office building. His Forester is probably 10-12 years old. I’ve seen him in/out of his car a couple times.

I'm OP. I just recalled this sort of smug couple in the neighborhood who waxed on how they didn't like cars, cars were just point A to point B, blah blah, had an old Honda CRV and Subaru. As soon as one of their parents passed away and they got a nice inheritance, they moved and bought a new BMW coupe and Land Rover SUV. lol

+1. My DH is from New England and lots of very wealthy people drive older, non luxury cars.

I wouldn’t call Toyotas and Subarus cheap.

I’d call Kias cheap. Do rich people drive Kias?

Probably not. They are looking for value.
