Waiting for this to show up in South America. I was just in a major SA city and there were many very large groups of Chinese tourists, including several groups at my hotel. The hotel also seemed to be favored by airline crews.

Hundreds are sick. Few have died.

Wow! I can see how people don’t want to turn away tourist cash, but WTH?

China announced that today there were 15 additional deaths, a number that is more than 50% of all the deaths that occurred before today. This brings their total reported deaths to 41.

Beijing's Forbidden City, Shanghai Disney and parts of the Great Wall, all hugely popular with Chinese tourists, have been shut down.

In Chicago, the Walgreen's in Chinatown has sold out of face masks and Lunar New Year events across the city have been cancelled.

Wuhan virus is being blamed for a plunge in oil prices owing to cancellation of travel plans for the Chinese New Year.

Hypothetically, let’s say he’s right. What difference does his prediction make for the majority of us?

DH and I can’t just bug out tonight with DD and cat for some mountain fastness and wait for it to burn itself out. We have teaching jobs and can’t skip that much work. DH has an oncologist appointment next week. We also don’t own a mountain fastness although I’ve wanted one since I was eight.

I see them all the time, and 99% of the time they're of Asian descent.

My cousin who lives in the UK just flew to China yesterday with her DH and 3 month old! I was shocked, truly.

And it's for vacation, not to see family.

Was this sarcasm? It's not locked down, it's here in the US, it's all over the world and all over China.

They're building a new hospital as we speak, just for this.

how can you safely construct a hospital in only 6 days?

It won’t be built safely. Stuff is built in safely there all the time. Not just in emergencies. The fear of not meeting deadlines is greater than the fear of a possible disaster.
