Wuhan virus (coronavirus) arrives in the USA

Yeah I’m starting to think this is mass hysteria.
People in Wuhan have known about this virus for a month. Chinese government tried to keep it under wraps.
They’ve been traveling everywhere.
If it’s as easily transmissible as early reports indicate (between 3 and 4 people infected from each carrier— see initial Lancaster study out today) then it must not be THAT deadly or we’d already have a pandemic.

Just like the flu! Stop panicking. It’s probably already worldwide.

Correct. Schools have returned in session (colleges) and any international students from China have returned back. Betcha we see lots of cases now.

This hysteria is so overblown. I had a 35 year old male with no medical history die this year from the flu. Healthy people die from the flu, pneumonia, and other illnesses that tend not to kill healthy younger people.

I know but I would rather read about the virus and the science behind it than read one more post about the impeachment or Meghan and Harry.

I wonder if there would be less hysteria if this were in a country that didn’t have a bad habit of lying and obfuscating. I think no one trusts China about that kind of thing since sars.

But from the Washington Post article “There are more than 830 confirmed cases of infection, and at least 26 people have died. A total of 8,420 people are reported to be under observation.” I mean, I’m no immunologist nor am I great with statistics, but these numbers as reported aren’t scary (while I’m sure they are very sad to the family members who lost people). China doesn’t release annual flu deaths, but this person figures about 130,000 die per year. 26 people dying of a virus is not a large number. https://www.quora.com/How-many-people-does-the-flu-kill-in-China-every-year-How-does-it-compare-to-the-damage-caused-by-SARS

You said that China has "a bad habit of lying and obfuscating," then follow up by posting the number that that same government is giving out re: deaths so far in this outbreak.

It's not a "habit" of lying and obfuscating, it's a calculated and centrally run program of control over media and social media. That's not hyperbole, it's a basic fact of life there and has been since long before this coronavirus. Already some images from hospitals are supposedly being scrubbed from social media posts very quickly ( per the Guardian newspaper). We cannot take at face value whatever the government there says about the extent of the virus or numbers of infections or deaths. No, I'm not a conspiracy theorist. I just don't see why anyone should trust numbers coming out of China. It seems naive to think we're being told what's really occurring there.

How do they test for it if there are so little information another virus?

The info from China is so incomplete and untrustworthy that we are going to have to see how it moves in more transparent countries. If in two weeks we have dozens or hundreds or cases in France and the US, then there’s a big problem. A 14 day incubation period is really lousy for these purposes.

I’m not trusting. They’re undoubtedly undercounting it. I’m just saying that it doesn’t pay to panic based on numbers that are fairly insignificant- unless you think they’re hiding north of thousands of death (which, hey, maybe. It’s China.). Short of washing hands and possibly wearing a mask, the cat is out of the bag and we can’t do anything about it.
