Your dogs are NOT members of the family

Please do the same with your bratty, whining children. My animals are trained and well behaved!

You people need to understand that your pets are not on the same level or deserve the same attention as a child. You are delusional to think so. It is sick to refer to them as you do. You need therapy.

My pets are absolutely my family. No one gets to dictate that to me, or their status vs. another person.

That said, I would not bring them somewhere they are not permitted or wanted.

This is not a pet person issue. It's a rude person unable to recognize boundaries. And it if wasn't their dog, it would be something else. I suspect they probably also suffer these flaws in other situations, too.

+1. So people should board up whiny children in the basement just like dogs?? PP is unfit for society and probably shouldn’t interact with any humans.

At the end of the evening after most people had left, aggressive cousin sends out an email announcing that she is hosting Thanksgiving. She adds that this will be an inclusive event and all human and fur relatives are invited. She then added that if anyone is an animal hater then it may simply be best if they did not attend. This will create more email drama because two other relatives always fight about which one of them is going to host Thanksgiving. Cousin has never been in the hosting competition for major events. We are going on a short vacation and have no intention of attending an extended family Thanksgiving trip this year so they can all duke it out.

OP back again. We are still planning on a short vacation so not attending Thanksgiving and have no intentions of hosting anything else in the near (or far) future but we're on the email lists so I thought I would provide an update.

The tables seemed to have turned on aggressive cousin as the family Thanksgiving invitation went out from hamster dog-eating cat aunt that it will be at her house. She included no dogs on her invitation but the dog crazies all started responding again that they are bringing their dogs. This aunt is more brazen than we were on this. She has just written back STOP IT NO DAMN DOGS in all caps. It seems we have started a trend.

HA! Great update, OP!

Service dogs can and it is very easy to designate a dog as a service animal.

When I was younger and had a dog, the dog was definitely a member of the family. However, we definitely understood that the dog was a non-human and unequal member of the family and our care of him took that into account. He had the run of the house until there were guests and then he was restricted to certain parts of the house. He went with us many places, but not all places and he often got shorter shrift when it came to his care, such as staying at a boarding kennel when we traveled/vacationed. Or sometimes he stayed home alone and just had a neighborhood kid come in to feed him while we were away. It's the life of a dog.

There is something mentally wrong with dog owners who equate their pets with human family members or even elevate the pet's rights above human family members. They have lost their sense of proportion and propriety.

People rampantly abuse the provision for emotional support animals which are not service animals. Its become a loophole for entitled pet owners to take their pets everywhere. In my family, it started with one entitled aunt bringing her dog everywhere because she was too cheap to board it. It is so small that it pees often and its far cheaper for her to take it with her if its more convenient for her to be out for many hours. She even insists on setting up pee pads for the dog inside the house of whomever is hosting. (We do not allow this either and she doesn't come to our home. )There are a few other relatives with small dogs and she strongly encouraged them to bring their dogs so what she was doing seemed more acceptable. On all RSVPs she included the dogs name. When she sent out a guest list she included the other people's dogs names. This has backfired on her because one of the younger and quite frankly stupid couples saw this and decided to being their poorly trained large dog too. Another young relative then started bringing their crazed large doodle. It basically ended the bring your dog allowance on this side of the family. The aunt who started it all is furious but after a fight between a large and small dog, small children getting nipped by both sizes and food being grabbed by dogs enough other older relatives said no more.

Imagine if we all locked our small kids in the basement when others came over, or left them home alone over Christmas while we traveled out of state. Yes. What a wonderful place our world would be in 30 years when those children inherit the Earth, and we are elderly and dependent on them for health care, government, banking, etc.

Will you pet nuts stop equating a pet with a human child. There is an inherent disparity in culture and society between pets and humans. Learn that and stop trying to elevate pets to the level of humans.

It’s a ridiculous amount of entitlement. BTW, I have a cat and a dog and wouldn’t think of bringing them to someone’s house. Good luck, OP. You are in the right

What about people who bring their kids when it is specifically stated, ADULTS ONLY, and then they expect you to find food for their brats because they only eat three things. I'll take dogs over kids any day.

Yes. Whining, crying, tantruming children are even more annoying than barking dogs. Dogs, are at least, cute.

What kind of family holiday is tagged as “adults only”?

But children are humans and dogs are dogs, so what you posted is irrelevant. I am sure you don’t mean to say our society has a higher obligation to the well being of dogs than human children who will one day inherit the Earth, so what is your point?

DD does allergy shots and is constantly on allegra and singulair (because you cannot avoid dogs all the time everywhere). Anyway, no dogs of any kind, for any reason are allowed in my house. If someone shows up with a dog they cannot come in--HARD STOP. My childs health is more important than someone pet (and before you start up, I am a dog lover and always have been).

Do you ban people who own dogs or do you have a decontamination chamber to put them through prior to entering your house?
