The law determines who falls under its protection. Current president and children get protection. FORMER presidents' children get it until they turn 16. |

Berkeley is purely merit-based. I doubt Sasha (or most kids) had the option. |
Not for out of state students. |
| Great engineering college. Kids in other undergrad depts are very much Tailgate State party school variety. |
This is nonsense, of course. |

How dare the President's daughter attend one of the most well-regarded universities in the world! ?
On a more serious note, it's hard to tell if half of these comments are from trolls or actual parents, considering I know a few who have made these types of elitist comments in private. |

Sorry, I'm from "the world," and out there had never even heard from U Michigan, and I doubt a single relative or colleague or friend has. |
Sorry, but so am I. From an academic family and background. People like me have all heard of U Michigan. |
Ah yes, anecdotes versus quantified data: https://www.timeshighereducation.com/world-university-rankings/2018/reputation-ranking#!/page/0/length/25/sort_by/rank/sort_order/asc/cols/stats |
Then your "world" is a very small one. U Michigan is a top school for many programs and those who admit they don't know about it simply show their own ignorance. |

As an aside -- UofM is 49% non-Michigan. To get state funds Michigan public colleges must be at least 51% Michigan residents in undergrad. UofM traditionally has always pushed that figure to keep it close and maximize revenue. Example: UofM In state tuition (not including room and board) $14,402 -- Out of state students pay $45,410.

| Plenty of people would prefer a big state school over an Ivy, everyone in my family included. Not everyone wants Harvard or Yale! Threads like this are a big reason why. |
