Why can't folks that send their kids to average colleges ever admit it?

Anonymous
My DD is a senior at a local private known to be very rigorous and she has strong scores, grades and several AP/Honors classes. Her counselor thinks that she is a strong ED candidate for several top LACs (think Bowdoin) but she doesn't want to go ED because she really loves her safety/likely schools and isn't willing to take them off of her list by committing to a place now. She may end up at one of those "average" schools and, if so, would be quite happy and likely get some merit money. One is a place I had never heard of before but it has programs she's interested in and a fun and quirky student body, much like her. Why would I steer her away from that just to prove to a random stranger that she's smart enough to get into Bowdoin?

You still don't get it.

Yup. The original post is startling obnoxious.

It may be obnoxious but it is also true. Above average people don't like to admit it when their children are just average. They knots they will twist themselves into just to keep from admitting the truth - precious couldn't get into HYPS in today's more competitive environment - are amusing and transparent. We see through the bullshit you know! YWIA!

There is something wrong with you.

Shrug. I just think it's funny when this happens. Particularly when the parents are so pretentious in all other areas of their lives but then try to put on a happy face that their snowflake ended up at JMU or someplace similar. Makes me laugh.

So you are mediocre in every aspect of your life, but your snowflake got into a highly rated school. Double shrug.

If it helps you to think that way, go ahead. No skin off my nose.

+1,000,000!

Lease luxury cars, faux-coy brag about everything on Facebook, buy a house in what they consider a fancy UMC neighborhood ... pretend college status doesn't exist.

And, what are you trying to prove??? That you didn't drive luxury cars or lived in a great neighborhood but hey your kid made it to HYP??? Sorry to burst your bubble, just as more successful parents can only do so much to influence their child's college outcomes, same is true for less successful parents. In the end it's upto the kid and that is half parenting and half innate intelligence of the kid. Stop giggling and patting yourself on the back.

Status job.. status social calender... status cars... status town... status neighborhood... status high school... WE DON'T CARE WHERE THE KIDS GO TO COLLEGE!

Sorry, not believable.

My husband and I attended average schools and we are currently part of the 1%. Is that ok with you OP? Or, are you going to start getting upset again?

Hey, us too! We both proudly graduated from Michigan State. We also are quite happily part of the 1%. But, you're right ... shuuuush! We don't want to upset OP!

We are a 3% family and our oldest goes to the University of Vermont and is skiing and studying to be a teacher.

Anonymous[b wrote:]HYP parent with child at UDC[/b]. Not making any excuses though there are circumstances that made this the best choice for my child. Will just say the savings are very significant (BTW far from a primary factor behind the choice) and child will have really good shot at a good graduate program based on grades, course load, sheer dedication, and demonstrated ability to do very well on standardized testing.

I hate to derail a thread, but here goes... Why do people describe themselves as having gone to HYP? Which is it, Harvard, Yale, or Princeton?? Why the secrecy???
I don't say that I'm a UVA/W&M/VT grad.

But they'll argue it was all about "fit," (seen many accolades for that school right here on DCUM).

Nobody describes themselves as a 3%'er. It's not a "thing" like the 1% is. You're embarrassing yourself. You're a 99%'er sorry.

All the defensive parents in here are just proving the OP's point.

Well, at least you admit it. I guess that would make OP happy. (Seems perfectly ok to me BTW).

Ha, ha, nice try to slip VT in there. No one would lump that place in with the other two.
