Why can't folks that send their kids to average colleges ever admit it?

Cost neutral. #24 vs #74. I question the family that would let an obviously naive kid make such a foolish decision. Teases out poor decision making and/or fear of competition.

It all depends on the major.

You are merely underscoring the OP's point....

It actually does depend. Unless you are a snob.

In my office, we have one from each, both with doctoral degrees from the same institution, and both are very good.

Why is it so important to you to win that no one else should ever get to save face, maintain a bit of dignity, etc.? You sound like a mean bully. Congratulations. You win.

I heart you. And OP is a dark-hearted ass who thinks he/she will somehow cheat death unlike the rest of us and that the right college really matters in the scheme of the universe. It really, really does not.

If you live and die by the rankings, then both would be considered above average colleges as there are far more than 150 colleges in the nation.

Yea, said no one ever.

It's all so desperate.

Why can't they just admit they raised an Average Eddie who goes to a normal college? ¯\_(?)_/¯

You're talking to the wrong people, then.

My older DC is not academically gifted just average, and graduated with average grades from an average state school. Has great people skills and is gorgeous so she landed a job in her field that she competed for with a high school friend who went to a top school. The other girl isn't as personable or pretty. My DD got the job because she's the better face and temperament for the public. She's happy. .

You are a very, very small person, OP. It must be sad to be you on the inside.

DH and I are not braggy people.

Some of us also care about our children becoming decent and kind people. I.e. nothing like OP.

This type of comment partly answers OP's question. On DCUM VT is considered an average college. However in your typical H.S. the average students are not admitted to Tech. So part of it depends on what your definition of average is.

DS (27) went to Ole Miss. ROTC scholarship. Plus National Guard.
DS (25) went to Colorado. ROTC Scholorship
DD (24) went to Florida. National Merit Scholar. Full ride.
DD (21) at Georgia. Partial merit scholarship.
DS (17) High school senior. Wants to go to Florida. We'll see who offers the most money.

Super proud of all five. My oldest is married with a baby. They own a business together. He is also a Captain in the Army National Guard. My second is a Captain in the Army - 82nd Airborne. My third is a teacher in DC. My fourth is majoring in nursing. She wants to be a nurse practitioner. My youngest thinks he wants to be an engineer.

Average colleges. No student loan debt. Great kids.

Wow, well done, Mom and Dad! You have raised a smart and accomplished group of kids. Thank you for sharing their success!

Thanks! I'm very proud of them

Lots of kids choose Tech over UVA for engineering.

Nursing, teaching, army? According to OP your kids are average.

That's my point. OP wondered why people "won't admit to sending their kids to average colleges ever". I nor only admit mine went to what dcum would consider average colleges....I'm super proud of them. My oldest two are serving their country as military officers. My daughter is an ESE teacher who works with profoundly disabled kids. I could not possibly be prouder!

Actually my nephew faced this dilemma. He knew he "should" go to UVA but really preferred Tech. Ultimately he went out of state.

Anonymous wrote:One of the big issues with OPs statement is that there doesn't seem to be a clear definition of an "average" college as opposed to an "above average" college. OP, what's your definition of an "average" college? I'd say that the top 50 national universities (as ranked by USNWR) are above average. The same goes for the top 50 LACs. Would you accept that definition OP?

No. Average to below. Top twenty: above average. Top ten: excellent.

Out of the top fifty: don't even bother. It's not worth the paper it's printed on.
