Why can't folks that send their kids to average colleges ever admit it?

Anonymous
HYP parent with child at UDC. Not making any excuses though there are circumstances that made this the best choice for my child. Will just say the savings are very significant (BTW far from a primary factor behind the choice) and child will have really good shot at a good graduate program based on grades, course load, sheer dedication, and demonstrated ability to do very well on standardized testing.

You still don't get it.

Yup. The original post is startling obnoxious.

It may be that one of the benefits of privilege is feeling like there are other options besides being a grind. I mean if your parents work like dogs and all they have to show for it is some drab box in Arlington you might decide a different path is your thing.

Oh yes, every successful smart kid is a "grind" with no friends and no life

It may be obnoxious but it is also true. Above average people don't like to admit it when their children are just average. They knots they will twist themselves into just to keep from admitting the truth - precious couldn't get into HYPS in today's more competitive environment - are amusing and transparent. We see through the bullshit you know! YWIA!

My kid is just average and going to an average school.

Should I move out of the DMV because I don't fit here?

Shrug. I just think it's funny when this happens. Particularly when the parents are so pretentious in all other areas of their lives but then try to put on a happy face that their snowflake ended up at JMU or someplace similar. Makes me laugh.

I know. Those people who are happy just because their kid is happy are the worst.

So you are mediocre in every aspect of your life, but your snowflake got into a highly rated school. Double shrug.

Then there are those of us who find it odd that there are actually people who find pleasure in judging the college choices of kids and labeling people as "just average" as opposed to "above average". It's disturbing.

Yes. It's as if our children are livestock, or products of some kind.

There is something wrong with people who think this way.

I totally agree, but the problem is not just with the view of the kids, it is also with the view of the schools. There are lots of great ideas, and research and teaching happening everywhere. To try to distill it to just a ranking by some defunct magazine is to not understand the life of the mind. Our society is in trouble if this is what we value. Many of the ideas that will make life better in years to come will come out of schools ranked outside of the top 20. And not just technology. If a student takes a poetry class that changes the way that they think about the world, does it matter that that class was taught outside of the ivy league? There are incredible ideas all over. It is small mindedness not to see them.

This is such a funny discussion, but does have a kernel of truth to it. My DH and I are both went to top colleges and have Ivy professors in the family. Yet, I doubt that our DS will be accepted to the same level of school. His white, male, US-born privilege won't get him as far as it used to. To be honest, that fact DOES make me slightly more tiger-mom on his behalf, but I'm also perfectly content to have him go to a state college, so I'm not going to go overboard. As long as he goes to a solid college and takes advantage of the opportunities there, I will be happy. The range of "solid" is much broader than DCUMlandia would have ...

The "NOBODY can get into the [top 20] colleges" is the newest thing amongst parents with pretty average kids. A step further, "UVA caps the best Common Wealth high schools, so it's rigged against UMC children."

DS's closest friend at what OP would describe as an average school was accepted at Harvard and Yale, among others. Went to Yale, didn't like the lack of meaningful interaction with his professors and transferred to the "average" school where they have amazing relationships with their professors. Full scholarship too. DS has same.
