If recruits get the impression the Oklahoma is a racist environment and start passing them over then Oklahoma won't be making too many bowl games which means Oklahoma won't be making as much money. Call me a cynic, but its been my observation that the only time racist shit really isn't tolerated is when it messes with the bottom line - - - cash$$$money. Consider the fact that Oklahoma ranks #11 on the Forbes list of College Football's most valuable teams with a Football Profit of $36 million. http://www.forbes.com/pictures/emdm45el/university-of-oklahoma-sooners/ You really think they are going to jeopardize that green to tolerate a few dumbasses who wanna get drunk and sing stupid songs?

I think you're off base, actually. President Boren came down hard on this immediately. The Greeks were off the SAE house by 5 PM yesterday and he said he would suspend or expel the students if they could be positively identified. As soon as they were, which was today, he expelled them. Really it's pretty much a model response and Boren has a stellar reputation. He's known for caring about much more than football.

Let's get real OU is a football school. Most of their players are AA. They have already lost star recruits because of this. The school depends on star recruits to get alumni money, win games etc. No AAs want to go to universities where this is tolerated.
It was really a financial decision to suspend them. Members of the football team had already staged one protest.

I'm a white guy and yes, I too will sing along to songs. I also watch Tarantino movies with gratuitous use of the N-word. But in this video, these guys aren't just saying the N word. They're singing- in unison- a well practiced song about how they'll never let any Ns into SAE and how they'll hang them from a tree. This wasn't just the spontaneous use of the N word by some white guy on a bus, it was a group of white guys singing that song in a choreographed way that indicates it was sung many, many times.

Seriously- it goes so far beyond the simple use of the N word in modern culture and media. Because use of the word HAS become more socially acceptable. But if you can't see the difference between popular rap and the video in question, I don't know what to say.

I just wanted to make sure that a bunch of white liberals were not so riddled with guilt that they literally edit themselves in their own cars when singing along to awesome music. That would make my head explode.

and yeah, I know the video is horrible. but in some respects, it IS JUST A SONG. A horrible archaic racist song that maybe they have been singing there for 50 years. It has to stop sooner or later, and I guess not it has. But just because a drunk 19 year old is singing a racist song does not mean, in my opinion, that (1) they are truly racist in their heart and actions and (2) if they are, that they will not grow up and change as they move out of Oklahoma and see the real world.

And here my friends is a perfect example of how racism is allowed to breed and continue.

I do hope, since they expelled students, they are cracking down on all sorts of 'hate speech' and will expel minorities for saying things about white people and will expel gay people or transgendered people for saying things as well.

So long as the hate speech policy is upheld evenly and fairly, expel away.

Do you have any examples to suggest these other groups have engaged in hate speech, including suggestions of violence, against white people at school-sponsored events? The school-sponsored part was pretty key to the rationale?

This song was about HANGING PEOPLE FROM A TREE. Something that happened in this country, not so long ago, to THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE. Who were generally beaten or tortured first, and often mutilated afterward.

I actually think this is a violation of the constitutional right to freedom of speech. It is a public university. Speech is in fact protected. Was it speech or conduct? If you expel for this reason, you are creating a dangerous precedence for campuses, where speech should be protected even if you find it reprehensible.

That said, why fight it if you are the student? Costs money and time, and just tells everyone you are a racist ahole.

I am sure, if there is a video of minorities and gays talking about lynching whites, they will. I am AA and most AAs don't go around singing songs about hurting whites. Most of us really don't talk about you at all.
