At DC privates - Why are VA parents considered "inferior"?

So much ignorance on this thread--really disgusting. Below some cencus facts Fairfax county (the nations richest county). the two numbers are Virginia overall first, Fairfax second. I dont know why I bother -- you can't change a racist.

Population, 2011 estimate 1,100,692
White persons, percent, 2011 (a) 68.1% 71.3%
Black persons, percent, 2011 (a) 9.9% 19.8%

Liberals have the right to shout I am better than you bc I have a trust fund, I live in NW, I make more money? I am confused here, who is the bigot here? WTF, is this a Real Housewives of Atlanta Reunion?

That would be your typical liberal. What makes people think that liberals are tolerant or fair?

- Wolf Trap (performing arts venue, outdoors in summer )
- Bull Run Festival of Lights (holiday tradition for us)
- Cox Farms Fall Festival (best in DC metro area, I have heard)
- Burke Lake Park (train ride, carousel, and ice cream shop)
- Watermine Family Swimmin' Hole
- Meadowlark Botanical Gardens
- Reston Children's Zoo
- Ideaventions (children's science labs and classes)
- Clemyjontri Park (includes accommodations for children with disabilities)
- Bounce houses (e.g., Pump It Up, voted best place to have a birthday party by Washington Family Magazine)
- Tyson's 1 and II (hardly strip malls)
- Wegman's
- Inova Fairfax Hospital (one of 50 best in the nation)

Farther out in VA:

- Colonial Williamsburg (not new!)
- Busch Gardens
- Great Wolf Lodge (with indoor water park)
- Kings Dominion

Finally, easy metro ride or drive to Smithsonian museums, Kennedy Center, and other DC attractions. And maybe not being at the epicenter in case of a terrorist attack (I am a bit of a worrier).

Generally, I don't know why anyone would give a s**t about what someone thought about where they lived. I live in VA, lived in MD, lived in DC. Don't really care either way what someone thinks. I lived where it made sense for me to live at the time. That being said, and looking at the above list, we also have the better half of the Air and Space Museum in VA, plus the Pentagon, CIA, etc.

The bridges are a real pain to cross, to get into VA. That's the reason people make jokes about interplanetary travel.

Don't really care where people live but I am not really sure you should base your argument on the fact you have the bounce house, reston zoo ( whose director was arrested for animal cruelty) and kings Dominion.

+1. We ventured out to VA last weekend and it took over an hour of being stuck on Chain Bridge Rd traffic then crossing the bridge to get back into the city. It was so frustrating being stuck in traffic that we vowed not to go back to VA any time soon. And this was Sunday afternoon. I can't imagine what it's like during rush hour!

I am sure because I have seen the kids laughing joyfully in the bounce houses, reaching out with excitement to the pet the animals (roaming free) on the zoo safari ride, and dashing to ride the roller coasters again and again at Kings Dominion. The zoo director you mention is no longer there, following her conviction on improperly euthanizing an injured animal. By the way she is a Maryland resident.

You fault for not checking WTOP. maybe you need better directions and Sunday afternoons are always a pain to drive anywheres bc people are coming back home from weekend away. let's see, Wisconsin ave and rock creek parkway are a pain to me. Don't ever ask me to go Bethesda, I don't understand a convenient way to get there just to go to a chain. I am Va resident and I still avoid Tysons area at all costs.

Given that this is an anonymous forum can I hear from people who feel this way and could they say why?

I don't think its part of the rehashed issue that VA families should use VA public schools and not "take up space" in DC privates given that the public school system may be better in NOVA. I am assuming it is something else.

Anyone open to sharing their thoughts?

I think what you are sensing is just the general judgement of people who live outside of the city.

1. Because we don't want to drive all the way out to Va for playdates.
2. Because we think you are wimps for not living in the District.
3. Because we don't understand why you would pay high tuition, brave traffic all to live in the burbs.
4. Because many of us already made our neighborhood friends when our children were younger.

To be fair, suburban supermarkets are designed very differently than your typical DC Giant. PP was listing kid-friendly places, and the Fairfax Wegman's (haven't been to others) has a "market cafe" (buffet, open seating, etc) and is a respectable destination for a decent meal, esp with kids in tow. An urban supermarket would never bother with that kind of amenity, although Whole Foods does lip service to it.

I would love to see a list similar to PP's for where to take kids in the city. Not snark--I'd like to see what people come up with.

Reminds me of the dinner party I attended, where every story the hostess told was about something that had happened to her at the Safeway. Yawn.

And MD/DC folk? Ever consider that the guy in the Gap jeans and t-shit might be worth millions?

We don't care. That is exactly what you VA folks don't seem to ever get through your skulls, it just doesn't matter if the guy in the Gap jeans is a millionaire, he is still wearing Gap jeans! Ugh. It doesn't matter who you are, you still live in Virginia.

Ah, so when you say we are jealous because we can't afford NW, you are saying that your narrow little minds can't see past the surface. How is this a liberal stance again?
