At DC privates - Why are VA parents considered "inferior"?

We don't care. That is exactly what you VA folks don't seem to ever get through your skulls, it just doesn't matter if the guy in the Gap jeans is a millionaire, he is still wearing Gap jeans! Ugh. It doesn't matter who you are, you still live in Virginia.

This is so stupid. First of all, last time I checked DC was one of the worst dressed cities in America. Secondly, if you want to buy much other than Gap jeans, you need to come to Tysons - the best shopping outside of lower manhattan. It is what it is. DC absolutely sucks for shopping, and sucks for fashion - like a BIG one.

- Wolf Trap (performing arts venue, outdoors in summer )
- Bull Run Festival of Lights (holiday tradition for us)
- Cox Farms Fall Festival (best in DC metro area, I have heard)
- Burke Lake Park (train ride, carousel, and ice cream shop)
- Watermine Family Swimmin' Hole
- Meadowlark Botanical Gardens
- Reston Children's Zoo
- Ideaventions (children's science labs and classes)
- Clemyjontri Park (includes accommodations for children with disabilities)
- Bounce houses (e.g., Pump It Up, voted best place to have a birthday party by Washington Family Magazine)
- Tyson's 1 and II (hardly strip malls)
- Wegman's
- Inova Fairfax Hospital (one of 50 best in the nation)

Farther out in VA:

- Colonial Williamsburg (not new!)
- Busch Gardens
- Great Wolf Lodge (with indoor water park)
- Kings Dominion

Finally, easy metro ride or drive to Smithsonian museums, Kennedy Center, and other DC attractions. And maybe not being at the epicenter in case of a terrorist attack (I am a bit of a worrier).

Don't really care where people live but I am not really sure you should base your argument on the fact you have the bounce house, reston zoo ( whose director was arrested for animal cruelty) and kings Dominion.

I am sure because I have seen the kids laughing joyfully in the bounce houses, reaching out with excitement to the pet the animals (roaming free) on the zoo safari ride, and dashing to ride the roller coasters again and again at Kings Dominion. The zoo director you mention is no longer there, following her conviction on improperly euthanizing an injured animal. By the way she is a Maryland resident.

Wegman's? A supermarket is one of your favorite places to go?? God bless . . .

I say this as a VA resident and former NY state resident - the original PPs list is pretty lame. Kings Dominion, really?!? BUT Wegmans is the real deal!! Not just a grocery store!!

Yes, think what you will, but it is true. In our now child-centric lives, Wegman's can even be a Saturday-night destination. Don't get me wrong, we do other things (e.g., took older DC with us to see Shen Yun at the Kennedy Center), but Wegman's can make the necessary but tedious task of grocery shopping fun. The deli area is like a little boulevard sparkling with lights. On one visit I heard a woman declare to her companion in a New York accent, "I want to LIVE here."

It all depends on your perspective. In my NOVA world I feel that I am at the center of things, having the attractions of "the city" nearby and yet being able to easily access those types of activities made possible by more open space. If anything I might want to be farther out or even in another part of the country or the world. Reading about North Korea, for example, really concerns me. Is California in even worse shape than we are? Or could an attack not come over the Atlantic Ocean?

Sorry for the wide-ranging post -- Wegman's, NOVA, North Korea. But there is a unifying theme -- concern for our children.

I am so glad that I live in VA and don't have to interact with the bigoted, nasty, insecure, ignorant, sad DC/MD posters on this thread.

Okay, how about if I replace Kings Dominion with Washington and Old Dominion (W&OD) bike trail? From Arlington you can ride 50 miles out to Leesburg/Purcellville, taking in pastoral sights and staying at a B&B if you wish. In the other direction from Arlington you can ride to Mount Vernon alongside the Potomac River. Have not ridden since we had older DC in a bike carrier, but hope to do it again one day when both kids are a little older.

Good god, you BELONG in Virginia, PP. Do southerners say " bless your heart" to you frequently? I imagine so as you come off as a bore, a bigot, and very low brow.

Is that what they say about lawyers from Takoma Park? Really? Who knew. Maybe I'm just too smart to spend another boring day tooling around a bunch of museums I've been to several times in elementary school in my own hometown like a freaking tourist or transplant, who I know find standing on grass exciting because it's The Mall. wow. And if I want to go to any of the tourist attractions, I'm there in 15 minutes from my house in VA with all it's lovely conveniences and shops and easy parking and great schools and lack of crime and my beautiful home/yard. But my favorite places to go are definitely the mountains (Shenandoah) or the beach, not DC. That is by far the absolute last place on my list to do anything except the zoo or aquarium now that DC actually has one apparently (plan to go - haven't yet).

I'll add concern for our children that goes beyond 'how much culture can I shove down their throats. Kids learn everywhere, and by not narrowing ourselves "out here in the VA sticks", we give our children a well-roundedness city snobs can't touch.

You do understand that by saying what you have, you have just described yourself? And what is 'low brow'? And who determines that?

You've just summed up why I am a conservative ...

Please stay in Virginia. Don't you have a trip to King's Dominiom to plan or some grocery shopping to do? I was actually reading this post with both amusement and horror, but now I feel compelled to just get snarky too. This is what posts like this do to people! Honestly, yes there are great things to do in NOVA and I think both DC (assuming one afford private school which is why I even find myself in this forum and biggest failure of DC and we all know it) and VA have great things to offer kids and families. But PP, with such a non-witty, and quite frankly, stupid, response to a great list of DC attractions you are feeding right into the stereotype that Virginians aren't very-well educated or worldly. Don't you see that? Really, don't you? "The national mall? Stupid! Rather be at King's Dominion." Your response to this list has less wit, humor and intelligence than a response my 5-year-old could have come up with. And what are you doing on a board called "DCUM" in the independent School forum anyway? No offense, but it seems quite clear from your response that you likely did not achieve a great education anywhere (whether private or public) or that you are the type of person honestly tryimg to explore the independent school route in DC for your children. "Sidwell? Never heard of it but it sounds like a loser school." "Maret? Don't know how to pronounce it but sounds totally boring and lame!".

Do I really need to go on here???

Anonymous
PP, it's hilarious that you are so worked up and judgmental about the answer! You have no idea whether that person even lives in VA. I would bet it's a troll. I can't even imagine someone having those sorts of responses. Someone is messing with you DC folks.

This whole thing is so stupid. You can be at most of these places from close in VA in 15-20 minutes.
