Will someone please explain to me why the suburbs of Virginia are "new money" but the suburbs of Maryland aren't? And assuming this is even true, what the hell is wrong with coming from a working or middle class background? These proud liberal posters are looking down their noses on people who don't come from generations of money...what unbelievable hypocrisy!

As horrible as the thread is, why would they shut down a thread that got to 14 pages in two days or something? Clearly it's a major draw. (Albeit insane. And warped that adults seem to think the school choice says so much about them, as opposed to being about their children.)

I feel like starting a thread entitled something like "Why Do Mothers from [insert state or locality] Get So Much Plastic Surgery" to see if all these wingnuts bite, like they did on this thread. Or maybe something saying mothers at a particular school are fat. Can't decide.

Admin didn't shut down private schools hottest moms and dads so what makes you think they would shut down this nonsense? Maybe it will eventually die a slow, agonizing death.

Anonymous wrote:I live in DC and am bewildered that people choose to live in Northern VA. It seems to be full of strip malls, mcmansions, ridiculous traffic, allergies to urban planning, and a disregard for the environment. Parts of MD are similar, it's true.

The big concern I have, though, is this willingness to throw in with to good ol' boys in Richmond. Mandatory ultrasounds, Confederate History Day, laws that prevent gay couples from making each other next of kin for medical and financial decisions, and the shortest death penalty appeal process in the nation. Either you approve of all of this, or you don't mind subsidizing it with your taxes. That I just don't understand.

Low taxes are also not necessarily correlated with a high standard of living. MA and CT have high taxes, but also great schools, good medical care, low unemployment, and longer life expectancies

BS

If you really disapproved of all this as much as you say then you would DO something about it by living where your vote counts towards making a change. Instead, you've just thrown up your hands and abdicated responsibility, all the while looking down your nose at people who are actually walking the walk. As a PP stated back on pg.9 of this ridiculous thread, you should be thanking Democrats like me for living in a swing State.

I'm a DC republican but I like your post about walking the walk. So true!

Very NEW. New money, New homes (poor construction quality), new Americans, new Everything. As someone once said There are new Lees in Virginia. If you get it you get it. Hides behind low taxes but actually his same tax burden when all taxes are factored in. Southern Va dominates politics and takes all the money. Look how long it's taken to widen 66. Very middle class, desolate landscape of strip malls and developments. Only argument to move there is "for the schools".

You are incredibly ignorant. Seriously. Every one of these opinions is either horribly misinformed, racist or just plain wrong.

For real. It's DC that's new everything. Where were you 10 years ago? DC is TOTALLY new. Actually, everything in your post is dumb and all wrong you are so clueless ugh.

We live in VA and send children to school in VA. A great place to raise kids! Some of my favorite places/activities in NOVA:

- Wolf Trap (performing arts venue, outdoors in summer )
- Bull Run Festival of Lights (holiday tradition for us)
- Cox Farms Fall Festival (best in DC metro area, I have heard)
- Burke Lake Park (train ride, carousel, and ice cream shop)
- Watermine Family Swimmin' Hole
- Meadowlark Botanical Gardens
- Reston Children's Zoo
- Ideaventions (children's science labs and classes)
- Clemyjontri Park (includes accommodations for children with disabilities)
- Bounce houses (e.g., Pump It Up, voted best place to have a birthday party by Washington Family Magazine)
- Tyson's 1 and II (hardly strip malls)
- Wegman's
- Inova Fairfax Hospital (one of 50 best in the nation)

Farther out in VA:

- Colonial Williamsburg (not new!)
- Busch Gardens
- Great Wolf Lodge (with indoor water park)
- Kings Dominion

Finally, easy metro ride or drive to Smithsonian museums, Kennedy Center, and other DC attractions. And maybe not being at the epicenter in case of a terrorist attack (I am a bit of a worrier).

Can we at least move this junk to off-topic? It's really not about schools. I can't even tell what it's about anymore. I sort of feel like it's just two people bickering.

It will go away if people stop posting.

I'm so confused by this whole hoopla. We live in nova and are four miles from our school. The people that live in dc and md have a dramatically worse commute. Why on earth would anyone care? And why is it assumed that you adhere to the historical political affiliation of a state just because you live there? Whaaaa? I'm from the west coast so maybe I'm just confused but over there the cities are often at odds with the remainder of the state regarding political an social issues. Those of us in nova obviously are not all racists. Really, you're just looking for a pecking order and you desperately need to feel like your choices make you a better person. That says much more about you than anyone you're judging so I wouldn't do it too loudly.

Oh and the whole I need a passport or whatever you md people say when you come to va, come on now. Pot, kettle. Over yourselves please.

I wonder if there is some evolutionary basis for people being reluctant to cross the water and viewing those who reside on the other side of water as being part of a different tribe? Could explain the sentiments of DC/MD residents toward those who live across the bridge. One has to believe that these feelings are real since they have been expressed repeatedly by many, and seem to persist despite any realities of distance, time, demographic data, voting results, etc. Perhaps those who don't have the gene that confers this non-water-crossing instinct are those who cross the bridge each day without trepidation.

Our Virginia roots were planted 350+ years ago so we have no interest in living in the District. Our dc's DC friends seem to like it, and we enjoy visiting our friends who live there.
