Awful time to be a Michigan

Prosecutor in court says Sherrone Moore went to woman's house, "grabbed several butter knives and a pair of kitchen scissors and began to threaten his own life. 'I'm going to kill myself. I'm going to make you watch. My blood is on your hands. You ruined my life.'"

U Michigan was informed of the inappropriate relationship in September, but waited until after the season ended and after national signing day for recruits before firing him in a very public manner.

U Michigan has wanted this coach to be gone for many months. Thought it had a way out that would negate severance payments.

Not sure why it would matter. He was paid for the work he did. Michigan is an at will employment state.

Because the University of Michigan administrators knew about the inappropriate relationship and unusual behavior for months before taking any action. Waited until after national letter of intent signing day. Should have disciplined coach earlier and/or at least directed him to get help for his mental condition.

Lawsuit coming.

I thought they were aware but had no proof until Monday when she came forward. They were both interviewed in the summer and denied. Could they have hired a PI? Probably. I’m not sure he has grounds for a lawsuit there. Was incredibly dumb of the AD to fire him without HR or security present though.

Also isn’t this black and white? Like if you are having an affair with a subordinate it is cause?

Nowhere near the same and definitely not worse. I realize that Trump is an obsessive lens through which you view all stories but it’s not relevant here.

A normal, healthy, married man with kids does not suddenly break into a woman's apartment and threaten to kill himself with a butter knife.

No doubt the University of Michigan had many signs this coach was unstable and a nightmare for women who were subordinates. Yet Michigan kept him on until the end of the season and new recruits were signed. I expect the lawsuits to be flying.

This was a complete failure by the University of Michigan. Their poor choices are going to be very costly.

Jesus, men. Evolve.

Yet we have a President convicted of sex crimes.

Actually, we don’t. We have a president who was found civilly liable for a crime linvolving sexual abuse. He was never criminally convicted.

And talked grossly about wanting to have carnal knowledge of his own daughter

Oh get real. Cheaters are everywhere. Guys who bang their admins are everywhere. And the University is not responsible for his poor personal life decisions. He clearly violated a bunch of employment policies and at this point it's not terribly important which ones. Anyone who gets pregnant by her married boss is also fully jointly responsible for the situation in my opinion.

The difference is that this guy's career IS likely ended because he was so prominent. Although it's not a great analogy, this is like Monica Lewinsky's situation. Plus he's losing millions of dollars. He will be able to go on living but his life IS kind of ruined. Not surprising he cracked up. Who knows, maybe he even has CTE?

I think this is endemic in college football. Many of the players are only in college to try get to the NFL. A dishonest mindset is the basis of the whole sport at the top of the game. It started out as a side pastime of students and then the priorities flipped to ensure a high level of play.

Michigan’s status as an at will employment state is irrelevant. Moore had a contract, and a reasonably sophisticated one with agents for him and lawyers for both parties.

Moore may sue in breach of contract but from available facts he will have a challenging time prevailing in any way. You never know - Kevin Ollie at UConn won a large judgment on difficult facts. No offense but the thought of a major college football coach being an at will employee is not worthy of consideration. The sport is all about money.

I concur in Michigan’s desire to find a new coach and this scandal while damaging to Warde Manuel provides an opportunity many supporters wanted. Any new superstar coach is going to want the question of the AD resolved quickly. Typically coaches want their AD to work for.

A normal, heathy 30 yr old woman doesn’t sleep with her married boss and get pregnant- likely intentionally. I’m assuming she knew how babies were made. They both are in the wrong- but his life is decidedly ruined and will be far worse off than hers bc of both of their actions

Dude just torpedoed his life. What an unbelievable fall from grace. What a scandal that likely will get uglier as more details come to light in the next few days.

Given the sizable contingent of folks here who dislike Michigan, feel free to take your shots at the school. We deserve it.

OP, you deserve "shots". If you were really sorry for the women that Moore wronged, you wouldn't have posted. Because the worst thing for them is the publicity and you've done your tiny part to make sure there's more of it.

Letting the employer and police handle it is enough. Instead you've provided a starting point where people can find more info and put clicks on links to other sites.

I think this is a legitimate topic for discussion. My point is that, OP, you should examine your own motives, because you're not helping the people you feel sorry for at all.

Football coaches are not at will employees like someone who works at McDonald’s. Moore has a contract with provisions that only allow for non-payment for specified reasons. This is presumably one of them, but there will still be a fight.
