A lot of parents don't have the time, interest or bandwidth to organize and push back. Parents' typically just quietly pull their kids out of MCPS in response to this crap. Oh and they talk about it at birthday parties and within the community.

They are also afraid of being shouted down as racist elitist. They whisper on the sidelines and keep their kids off the bus, etc.

This is definitely the case. We're in the Rockville Cluster and when the rape happened a few years ago, even the super came out and shouted down parents for being racist.

Lots of parents just quietly pull their kids out of MCPS because it's easier than trying to make changes in a corrupt, dysfunctional school system.

The investigation in Rockville showed there was no rape.

Of course, there was one at RM with the security guard but nobody cares about an old white dude raping girls, just another day in paradise.

what do you mean no one cared? He was arrested.

Let out without bond, picked the girl
Up, raoed her again, his wife requested a restraining order to keep him away from her children, his stepchildren and it was denied. He got less than 18 months.

Nearly all, if not all.

I meant how many kids are in that group home program—20 or 200 or what? (As opposed to teens that are actually living at the Greentrre shelter, which I think is a totally different situation—I think those are kids/teens living with their moms who have fled an unsafe living situation like abuse. It seems like they are not the problem—it’s the group home teens who were placed there as ann out-placement from juvenile justice involvement.).

In 2022 there were 8.

Are these people for real????

"In September 2019, a 19-year-old Black student from GAP was charged with assault after he allegedly struck another student with a frying pan during class, according to Montgomery County police. Chapman says the student suffers from mental health issues and had been racially harassed. He was later found not criminally responsible in a county court."

So, this 19-year-old 'kid' is essentially criminally insane - and still gets to go to Whitman High?

Wait… so a hate crime was committed against a mentally ill student and he hit the racist with a frying pan.

Sounds like a FAFO situation.

This is not the first video I've seen. Many times the videographers are in on it - notified in advance so they can capture it - they are not simply bystanders who take out their phones. The videos may not make it to X or the local news but they are widely circulated amongst the students. This violence is not a new trend. A few years ago a kid brought a skillet to school, stood up in class, took it out of his backpack and smashed another kid over the head. Did you hear about it? Nope. Miller's letter referenced the situation being handled according to the MCPS Code of Conduct. Does this rise to the most serious Level 5? Even if it does, Restorative Justice Practices are the primary intervention which means nothing will happen.

MCPS Code of Conduct: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/contentassets/2bcd99470c9f44f891cc5be276c25d19/fy25-student_code-of-conduct_web_english-secured-9.4.24.pdf

My kids also attend/attended Whitman. They don’t describe these fights as weekly, and we certainly aren’t receiving weekly communication about this type of a fight. During the 7 years my kids have jointly been at Whitman, I can name less than a handful of serious incidents. I also remember a young man from the Greentree shelter who was a graduation speaker a few years ago, who described his incredibly difficult family circumstances, and the support and stability he received at Whitman while living in the shelter. He had earned a scholarship to college and thanked certain teachers and admin for helping him do so.

Violence should of course never be tolerated, but the blanket negative statements about the shelter are very disturbing and discouraging.

Ummm, I've been around the community a looking time and don't remember this. Could be damage control pr?

We live in the Whitman cluster -- so close our kids would be walking to school if they attended. Like many other parents, we just chose private. Not interested in waiting years for MCPS to attempt to sort out all the issues.

I wish Jawando could see all your comments. Mayhaps you can convince him to rethink RJ.

I don’t have problems with RJ when it has proper investment to include RJ Specialist and Social workers who are experts in the work, school based training, and appropriate consequences and repair to the community. This sounds like a good situation for RJ.

That said, I’ve seen kids and adults keep pushing folks until they get their a$$ beat or have their vitriol thrown back at them. Sometimes hard lessons get people to change their behavior and offers a lesson to others.

As a parent of younger children I appreciate your input. People don't say stuff like this out loud in real life to people they don't know well. It's useful to know how other parents approach these problems even if their solution is to bail for private. We can't afford private so we will have to make other choices. But I want to be informed when I make them and that includes input from parents who have removed their kids from MCPS.
