Video of hallway brawls at Whitman

This is not the first video I've seen. Many times the videographers are in on it - notified in advance so they can capture it - they are not simply bystanders who take out their phones. The videos may not make it to X or the local news but they are widely circulated amongst the students. This violence is not a new trend. A few years ago a kid brought a skillet to school, stood up in class, took it out of his backpack and smashed another kid over the head. Did you hear about it? Nope. Miller's letter referenced the situation being handled according to the MCPS Code of Conduct. Does this rise to the most serious Level 5? Even if it does, Restorative Justice Practices are the primary intervention which means nothing will happen.

I think people who just read the MoCo360 article thinks the school only cared about the violation of school policy regarding recording fights, but from watching this video it's pretty clear the videographer was in on it.

I don’t understand why Miller dismissed the football coach but is taking a way less harsh stance on this.

A lot of parents don't have the time, interest or bandwidth to organize and push back. Parents' typically just quietly pull their kids out of MCPS in response to this crap. Oh and they talk about it at birthday parties and within the community.

They are also afraid of being shouted down as racist elitist. They whisper on the sidelines and keep their kids off the bus, etc.

This is definitely the case. We're in the Rockville Cluster and when the rape happened a few years ago, even the super came out and shouted down parents for being racist.

Lots of parents just quietly pull their kids out of MCPS because it's easier than trying to make changes in a corrupt, dysfunctional school system.

The investigation in Rockville showed there was no rape.

Of course, there was one at RM with the security guard but nobody cares about an old white dude raping girls, just another day in paradise.

Bring back the SROs. If this happened outside a CVS, these kids would be in handcuffs. The same behavior should happen in schools. Implement a zero tolerance policy and follow it. If more people of a certain race are placed into handcuffs, so be it. As long as the same policy is followed for everyone, it’s fair. As far as fighting and other inappropriate behaviors the school needs to send these kids home for the day.

If home is the group home, then let them deal with this nonsense. Seems to me that a person send home X times from a comprehensive school for poor behaviors should not have the privilege of attending a comprehensive school.

Wow Principal Gregory Miller is really downplaying this , saying they might get an infraction for beating the child wtf

Why do the rules not apply to the schools? If you are walking down the street and a couple of people come up to you and start hitting you, beating you up, kicking you in the head it’s not a fight. It’s assault.

The schools and principles and media keep minimizing this as a fight. I said it up thread, these kids need to be expelled, and some of them need to be sent to Juvie.

Sent to Juvie? They are already in a shelter for offenders.

Expelled. Out of the school system. Not assaulting other kids.

There's no such thing as "expelled out of the school system." Expulsion means expulsion from a school within the system. And even that is only for a period of time and not permanent.

Aren't there kids removed from BCC at Whitman?

Probably. They generally can't expel them from MCPS, they just move kids to other schools. There were a couple of Churchill kids at Whitman when DC was there.

We need to know what happened with that coach. Very suspect.

Nearly all, if not all.

I meant how many kids are in that group home program—20 or 200 or what? (As opposed to teens that are actually living at the Greentrre shelter, which I think is a totally different situation—I think those are kids/teens living with their moms who have fled an unsafe living situation like abuse. It seems like they are not the problem—it’s the group home teens who were placed there as ann out-placement from juvenile justice involvement.).

In 2022 there were 8.

Are these people for real????

"In September 2019, a 19-year-old Black student from GAP was charged with assault after he allegedly struck another student with a frying pan during class, according to Montgomery County police. Chapman says the student suffers from mental health issues and had been racially harassed. He was later found not criminally responsible in a county court."

So, this 19-year-old 'kid' is essentially criminally insane - and still gets to go to Whitman High?

that is a mere technicality. A minor cannot consent to sex though md allows them to if there is only a certain age difference.

when I went to Mcps you’d get arrested if you had a pager. You’d be suspended or worse if you had aspirin . I honestly don’t think at least my school was a good school. I don’t think it prepared me for college at least they took some behaviors seriously .

So the admin think recording the fight is much worse behavior than actually beating someone up..

My kids also attend/attended Whitman. They don’t describe these fights as weekly, and we certainly aren’t receiving weekly communication about this type of a fight. During the 7 years my kids have jointly been at Whitman, I can name less than a handful of serious incidents. I also remember a young man from the Greentree shelter who was a graduation speaker a few years ago, who described his incredibly difficult family circumstances, and the support and stability he received at Whitman while living in the shelter. He had earned a scholarship to college and thanked certain teachers and admin for helping him do so.

Violence should of course never be tolerated, but the blanket negative statements about the shelter are very disturbing and discouraging.
