Let’s now put all that behind us and work together, as one nation, to make America a better place; a place our children and grandchildren will be even more proud to call home.

Who’s with me?

We have a president who has no interest in what is best for America, or in making it a better place. This is a time for resistance, not naivete.

+1. A lot of posters on this board come across as rather naïve. Remember when Trump lost, he instigated an insurrection during which people were killed. And yet you now want me to hug, hold hands and sing Kumbaya with you after you voted him in, again?!

I will neither forget, nor forgive. This is my children’s future you are f’ing up. And my planet’s. May a hurricane or a pregnant teen daughter or a job loss show you what you just voted against and what happens when the social networks you so despise are pulled from under your feet. That is my wish, not unity with bigots, egotists and dummies.

So what exactly do you propose doing - start a civil war? The people voted - a majority popular vote decided to back Republican right-leaning political policies and values. I'm sorry you don't agree with them. But aside from starting a civil war, the only only actual path forward is for you to focus on putting forth a viable Dem nominee in 2028. This is what a democracy is.

But as someone who voted for Harris as an anti-Trumper (but still in favor of more Republican right-leaning political policies and values), if the Dems don't do some soul searching and put forth a more moderate candidate in 2028 I'll likely vote blue as I'm sure Trump won't be a candidate.

Speaking of naive, how exactly do you propose protecting the future?

Stow your emotions and start thinking about how to win.

Seems to me winning requires getting more votes. Where/how do you propose acquiring them?

First of all, you don't need more votes than 4 years before- you just need more votes than your opponent. Some of this problem will be addressed by old people dying off.

Second, there's a pretty clear lesson that Americans are simply too sexist to vote for a woman. I thought we were past that point, but obviously not. The democrats need to stick with men- preferably white men.

In 1933, after a series of elections, Hitler was appointed Chancellor and ruled absolutely until his suicide in April 1945, after murdering millions of people just because of what they were. Millions more lost their lives fighting for freedom
It desecrates the ultimate sacrifice of American soldiers who died in WWII, Korea, Viet Nam, and the Middle East wars fighting to preserve our freedom to elect a draft dogger who calls them losers.

Civil war is what the MAGAs wanted when they didn't get their way.

Why is it that only Democrats are ever expected to be the grownups in the room?

But no, I'm not going to "come together" with people who think that I don't deserve to make healthcare decisions about my own body or think that their right to own an AR 15 is more important than my and my children's right to not get randomly shot in public.

I'm sorry, I just can't "come together" with people who believe those things.

What's the alternative? Fight them? Despise them? Deplore them?

How will any of those options improve things?

My suggestion: talk to them, listen to them, and find areas where you do agree. Find common ground where it exists and gain mutual understanding where it doesn't.

THAT is the path forward to a better nation.

--Harris voter who has lived in the bluest and reddest parts of America (happily)

Hard Pass. I don't need a$$holes as friends. Coming around to their way of thinking (what you think I should do) is not going to "improve" things either.

You missed the point entirely.

1. I’m not talking about being “friends”. I’m talking about interacting.

2. I’m not talking about “coming around to their way of thinking”. I’m talking about understanding their way of thinking and explaining yours.

You want to make things better and/or get your way politically?

You’d better find allies, forge consensus, and compromise.

MAGA abhor compromise. Where was the compromise when Biden won? Didn't see any? No? That's right, you didn't. You saw an insurrection and constant vitriol and obstruction.

*You* voted for this acrimony. Live with it.

*I* voted for Harris. And Obama. And Clinton. And Biden.

*I* don’t live in a blue bubble.

*I* DGAF about who started it or who’s more awful or who hurt whose feelings.

*I* DO want to win and I never want to see a national MAGA candidate elected again.

*You’d* apparently rather be outraged than sully yourself by actually doing the work to understand and persuade people.

Persuade them with what? Please do tell us how we can get through to the MAGA faithful when they are so deeply, deeply invested in Trump's hateful lies? Please share this amazing wisdom you have that no one has figured out before now. HOW WILL YOU GET THEM OUT OF THEIR BUBBLE? I ask you seriously. Lay it out.

Sully myself? I'm in a bubble? Why? Because I read multiple news sources and think critically about the world?
Because I judge people by their words and actions? I would sully myself if I capitulate to those hateful lies. I will not go along with their hateful nonsense.

You act as though these MAGA people will come to the table to discuss things in good faith. I think you are a fool. Won't ever happen.

“Persuade them with what?”

That question literally says it all. You don’t know enough about these people to even know who they are or what they care about.

Start there.

And yes, you should literally sit down at the table with some Trump voters. I think you’ll be surprised at how uninvested most of them are in his most hateful and egregious positions.

This isn’t about “capitulating”. Quite the opposite: it’s about winning.

Perhaps you should apply your undoubtedly elite critical thinking skills to that goal. Seems more productive than performative outrage.

—Harris voter who also voraciously consumes media, thinks critically, has multiple advanced degrees from “elite” institutions

For someone who claims to be about listening and understanding and moving forward, you are unrelentingly condescending and rude. I'm sure the MAGA voters will just love having you talk down to them. You didn't answer my question, because of your *inaccurate*, knee jerk reaction to "Persuade them with what?" There is an elitist in this conversation and it's not me.

I have listened to them. Over and over again for eight years. "Persuade them with what" refers to the fact that, though they say they care about immigration and the economy first and foremost, they have shown with their votes that they aren't really interested in any factually-based discussion or feasible answers on how to deal with those things. How do you bring these people back to the table to discuss real solutions when they won't even agree on the facts of what is happening? When they prefer the lies and scapegoating of Trump? Are you suggesting we listen again to these complaints we have all HEARD A MILLION TIMES and then lie to them in the same way Trump does? That immigrants are all rapists and murders who are stealing their jobs? That mass deportation of immigrants will solve all their problems? That tariffs are the way to address inflation? He said those things and they voted "yes".

After you listen to all these grievances that we are all really, really, really familiar with by now (if you actually do consume news from multiple sources), what will you say? How will you counteract the misinformation? How will you "win"? Are you going to pat them on the hand and tell them about your degrees from "elite" institutions?

Have you looked at the Gen Z vote trends?

And lemme get this straight, rather than work on policy/issue-based persuasion, you’d rather limit D candidates based on gender and race?

Doesn’t sound particularly sensible.

The policies aren't the problem for the Democrats. A clear majority of people support things like gun control, civil and reproductive rights, and health care. The problem has been the candidates.

Exactly. MAGA was promising rioting in the streets if they didn't win, and now they want to talk about "moving forward together" - unless anyone protests, in which case Trump promises to have the military shoot them in the legs.

The majority of Republicans were grownups in 2020, but you only paid attention to the fringe MAGA group who participated in J6. You then blamed J6 on the entire Republican party and proceeded to demonize the entire Republican party as racist and bigoted.

We've got that "elite" degrees lady upthread going on about how we have to sit down with Trump voters and really listen to their grievances. As if we aren't all painfully familiar with those grievances and as if that will change anything. We've all heard the grievances. The entire idea that Dems lost this election or 2016 because we don't *understand* the grievances of the middle class or the working class or the Dems are all coastal elites or whatever is bupkis.

People who voted for Trump want the lies. They prefer the lies to reality. Solving the problems we face is hard. They don't want to hear that. They want to blame the immigrants, blame somebody, whatever. History repeats itself over and over. When times get complicated or tough, people turn to the strongman who promises "I can fix it, it will be easy." Humans have short memories and are really good at self delusion.

But as someone who voted for Harris as an anti-Trumper (but still in favor of more Republican right-leaning political policies and values), if the Dems don't do some soul searching and put forth a more moderate candidate in 2028 I'll likely vote blue as I'm sure Trump won't be a candidate.

I don’t propose anything. I know that I will get screwed over by Trump’s presidency, but his voters will get screwed over even more. So let them rot. That is how they will learn. Reasoning doesn’t work with them.
I used to feel sorry for them. I don’t any more. Opioid crisis, obesity, hurricanes, bankruptcy due to skyrocketing healthcare costs, lack of well-paying job opportunities? That’s your own doing.
