Thefts have occurred forever.

I think you think that your second link shows that the Lulu Lemon employees were fired for calling the police, but you didn’t read the article. They filmed and interacted with the shoplifters, which is against store policy as that might have caused a physical escalation that could have resulted in staff or customers getting hurt. Which is pretty standard for companies: if you aren’t in Loss Prevention, you don’t prevent the loss except by watching people and alerting Loss Prevention. If you get shot on the job, you’re going to sue the store.
