I hope people really push Frumin on a yes or no answer to re-criminalizing fare evasion. Don't let him try to say nothing and avoid a real answer like he usually does. It's one of the clearest examples of the council supporting a crime, and creating a problem where there wasn't one. It also has a very simple fix that could happen ASAP if the will was there, and it would be a great litmus test before the elections. You also don't need to study/think about/look into something we were doing up until 2019, and something that made a mess of the entire system when we stopped doing it. If Frumin's on the right side of crime, he can say yes it should be re-criminalized and yes, he's going to introduce legislation to do just that. |
I believe that the booting/impound crew is skeletal..one truck for the whole city? That means they aren't serious about it. You can ask Frumin at the meeting. Same things with the car theft/jacking task force being understaffed according to the detectives. If you care about an issue, you staff it. |
SNL used to parody the elder George Bush always saying "wouldn't be prudent." Today DC politicians would reflexively say "wouldn't be equitable and welcoming." |
And it's not even like they can claim they don't have the resources for more booting/impound crews as they would quickly pay for themselves with the sheer number of unpaid tickets out there. And they should also give people something like 120 days to make good on unpaid tickets and violations for any cars in impound, after which the city should put those cars on the auction block. Likewise, staffing up on car theft / carjacking / shoplifting will save the city money in the long run due to stemming lost income because of lost tax base when stores close, when people don't want to drive into the city for work or retail or entertainment and so on. |
| So at these meetings is anyone demanding that the USAO step up and prosecute? And if so, what's the response? |
This is an excellent idea. MD, VA and WMATA all opposed the action of the Council. It has had disastrous and far ranging consequences, financially and re: safety. Frumin is pretty weak sauce but perhaps with his feet held to the fire he can perform adequately. He seems to take a lot of his cues from JLG, who is likely on her way out. Perhaps he can glom onto Pinto next? Or Henderson? |
| Graves will be at the meeting. Talk to him! |
Enforcing this would be inequitable. |
What makes you believe this? |
|
Are you guys serious? I'm a felony prosecutor and no, he would not have this data off of the top of his head. The office may have it but he's not walking around with the exact number of robberies, rapes, homicides, etc. rolling around in his head all day. That's just a dumb question from an overly excitable Karen who probably doesn't even have to worry about these crimes in her neighborhood. |
Frumin didn't pay much attention to the spiking crime problem initially. But then he kept hearing the spiking complaints from his Ward 3 constituents. Frumin realized if he didn't start to take crime seriously, he'd be in a real pickle ball. |

He doesn't take it seriously and just pays lip service. His indifference when victims at a CP meeting when victims shared their stories was shocking and he got a lot of negative feedback, causing him to tweak his messaging slightly.
He has continued to sound waffly after the shooting of the young woman and re: Pinto's bill, despite even Allen and Nadeau announcing support. The bill goes to vote today at 11 am. If you have not shared your thoughts with Frumin's office, now is the time. Phone and email at link https://dccouncil.gov/council/ward-3-councilmember-matthew-frumin/ |
