Ward 3 Crime Meeting w/CM Frumin, USAO Graves and AG Schwab 1/17 6pm Cleveland Park library

This man intervened when an elderly man was attacked by armed teens on Connecticut the other night. He then had guns pointed at HIM. Thank goodness the kids took off and no one was shot. The police alerts for this and another incident on Connecticut are upthread. Thank goodness he acted, as a parent, I don't think I could feel able to do the same.

But, bike lanes will help. Right?

NO, silly! The only thing that can turn it around is more PICKLEBALL!

Another robbery last night on Connecticut Ave. Ask Matt hard questions on Wednesday night. Don’t let him speak for 25 minutes about his amazing experience in the MPD Community Academy. We need more cops, undercover cops, bait cars, aggressive policing. NOW.

Matt had this to say about Pinto's bill in his newsletter, not really full throated support, is it?

We face an epidemic of crime and gun violence in our city that impacts every resident, regardless of age, income, or ward, and we must work together to empower public agencies to stem the tide of violence. You’re part of that conversation: Please plan on attending my Ward 3 Public Safety Forum next Wednesday.

Yesterday, my colleague Councilmember Brooke Pinto introduced the Secure DC Omnibus, a package of bills and initiatives aimed at taking action to address public safety. While I do not vote on the Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety, I have been actively engaged in the measures that comprise the omnibus. I met with Councilmember Pinto in advance of the bill's release and will be actively engaged in the debate going forward.

He dithered in June too, and echoed a lot of JLG's rhetoric about juveniles. He ultimately did support the bill in June, JLG did not. If you support it, email and CALL his office, he is not reliable on this issue.

Nadeau and Allen have said they will support, none of this pontificating and preening as Frumin did in June and seems to be doing now. He's not a public defender of juveniles nor an activist or policy expert. He's supposed to represent the interests of Ward 3.

6 of the members of the Council represent each of us, reach out to your ward CM, Chair Mendelson and all 4 at large members. If they support your views, affirm that.

Ward 3 voters really need to think if they are going to keep voting for someone who wants our laws to be even laxer than Allen and Nadeau want them.

Of course he's going to do his old song and dance of, "I'm very concerned about crime, but..." or "We're working on a lot of ideas..."

I've even heard people say, "Well, now it looks like he's finally paying attention" - people, he didn't even want to talk about crime for the first year he was in office, and ignored his constituents who contacted him about it. Look, if you share his disinterest in crime, fine, vote for him. I'm just completely confused about why people who are concerned about crime still support the guy.

I agree. Even if we discount crime, what has he done? And honestly, crime is all I want him to do at this point.

With that being said, I voted for the Republican. So this is sort of what I expected.

Don't let Graves run the clock with endless excuses on Wednesday night. Ask for concrete steps they are taking to prosecute more cases. Congress (with DOJ oversight) needs to exercise regular oversight over the office. Council doesn't really have any authority and are anti-prosecution anyway. This is not a sustainable way to live.

We need enforcement and prosecution and to roll back legislation that has weakened both, especially re: vending and juveniles.

As Baltimore is proving, the basics yield results. DC has plenty of data points that a free for all approach > chaos.

^ fare evasion should also be re-criminalized now that you can get free fare cards if qualify for EBT.

Agree. I did not vote for him. And yes, he presents poorly.

Fare evasion arrests would catch suspects wanted on outstanding warrants.

So would pulling over cars with fake dealer tags. The council has prevented cops from doing this just like they decriminalized fare jumping.

The Council has enacted the policies that enabled the skyrocketing crime.

Doesn't the new traffic bill address this? The biggest problem with fake tags is that they aren't connected to anything or anyone. DC can mail all the tickets in the world but they will have nowhere to go. As such the ONLY thing they can do is to boot and/or impound vehicles on the spot.
