White flight from MCPS

Dang. As a Kennedy parent, I did not know about this case from 1998. Yikes:

Is this sharp rise in the MCPS hispanic population actually due to illegal immigration of poor and/or violent people from central america? If so this is definitely a broader society problem and blame can be placed on on federal government for it's open border polices.

If you read between the lines of the BOE meeting, it seems we’re getting an influx of the latter and not the former.

ICYMI: an 18 year old Latina was murdered by 3 other latinos (teens) this may and the killers were recently arrested. They cut off her head with a machete and dumped the body in a wooded area near a park in Olney.

It barely made the news.

^^^This is in our local schools. It’s a gang problem with rampant violence. It’s why many of them allegedly left Central America.

This story was crazy. I only read about it on the OBEX list serve because we live in the area. Not much (if any?) media coverage at all!

I guess this Latina girl’s life certainly didn’t matter to people here in the DMV.

A machete killing of an 18 yo girl. Let that sink in. Tragic and scary. Why did it not make the news?

Tragic and disturbing yes but not related to MCPS.

She was 18 and likely an MCPS student. How is it not related?

dp.. bad things happen to kids outside of school all over the country. People don't generally associate that bad event that happened outside the school with the school, especially if the perp is not part of the school.

As an 18 year old, she was either a current or former MCPS student. You don't think it would be traumatic to learn that a classmate was macheted to death in town?

When our school, Kennedy, had a student death, which also happened off-campus by the way, there was an immense amount of school support and messaging around the death. This IS an MCPS issue.

If she was 23, I could see your point, but an 18-year-old either was a present or very recently a former MCPS student.

She might've been at one of the many DC privates. I heard they're really popular these days.

All MCPS MS and HS bathrooms are full of kids vaping and getting high. Anyone who tells you otherwise either only has ES kids, is in denial, or lives under a rock

That's not true at the school where I work. I think you must be talking about one of the bad schools.

Probably not the best idea to make major investments based on rumors reported by a preteen.

My preteen claims they've never even encountered vaping at their MS. All places are not the same.

Mine says the same thing, and there's no reason they'd make this up since we're fine with it either way. Not every school is that crazy. I think it's the far-right astroturfers up to their usual fear-mongering.

Where do you work?

Well, posters on this threads and other threads in the past have specified which schools their kids attend when talking about weed and vaping in the high schools.

But not a single person is willing to name their middle school or high school that does NOT have drugs/vaping.

I think it’s those posters who are up to their usual lies. But feel free to post which MCPS high school your kid attends that does not have kids smoking weed or vaping. We’d love to know where this isn’t an issue!

Maybe it would help if posters told us which schools have drugs and vaping. People posting this stuff anonymously without naming the school isn't all that credible to me either. When our kids started HS, we told them to expect it because of the claims here, but turns out that exaggerated. They say they smell weed on the street here way more and have rarely encounter vaping.

Every school, even the elite W schools is dealing with drug issues.

I can literally list a drug incident for almost every MCPS high school if I keep going. So stop the lies.

DP. And private schools. Schools have drug issues. They have for decades. My public high school had kids smoking in the bathroom. My husband's fancy private school had kids doing coke in their bathrooms.

Kennedy HS had one student death (at home) and at least 2 od's. My 10th grade neighbor who goes there doesn't use the bathrooms at school because girls are in there using drugs. There is a thing they're doing lately.. purging? sounds like per ging, not making oneself puke. They put a drug on foil, heat it from underneath and inhale the vapors. My neighbor says it can be smelled in the hallway outside the bathrooms.

It is possible that she moved here at 17 or 18 and wasn’t enrolled in MCPS at any point. This happens more often than you might think. Mid to late teen kids run away or are kicked out, they move to a new county and don’t enroll in school. It is especially the case for girls who might be living with an older male or being trafficked.

I just pasted news stories on the murder from 5 different news outlets. Stop saying it wasn't in the news.

I think what you really mean is that is there wasn't visceral and lasting community outrage about the incident in the same way that there was with the Magruder shooting. That is true and accurate. But it was covered in the news.

It made the news in October.

She presumably went missing in May when she was murdered, but where was the coverage?

Go check out the MoCo police social media to see how many missing Latina teens there are every week.
