Is this sharp rise in the MCPS hispanic population actually due to illegal immigration of poor and/or violent people from central america? If so this is definitely a broader society problem and blame can be placed on on federal government for it's open border polices.

If you read between the lines of the BOE meeting, it seems we’re getting an influx of the latter and not the former.

ICYMI: an 18 year old Latina was murdered by 3 other latinos (teens) this may and the killers were recently arrested. They cut off her head with a machete and dumped the body in a wooded area near a park in Olney.

It barely made the news.

^^^This is in our local schools. It’s a gang problem with rampant violence. It’s why many of them allegedly left Central America.

This story was crazy. I only read about it on the OBEX list serve because we live in the area. Not much (if any?) media coverage at all!

I guess this Latina girl’s life certainly didn’t matter to people here in the DMV.

A machete killing of an 18 yo girl. Let that sink in. Tragic and scary. Why did it not make the news?

Tragic and disturbing yes but not related to MCPS.

She was 18 and likely an MCPS student. How is it not related?

dp.. bad things happen to kids outside of school all over the country. People don't generally associate that bad event that happened outside the school with the school, especially if the perp is not part of the school.

As an 18 year old, she was either a current or former MCPS student. You don't think it would be traumatic to learn that a classmate was macheted to death in town?

When our school, Kennedy, had a student death, which also happened off-campus by the way, there was an immense amount of school support and messaging around the death. This IS an MCPS issue.

If she was 23, I could see your point, but an 18-year-old either was a present or very recently a former MCPS student.

It is possible that she moved here at 17 or 18 and wasn’t enrolled in MCPS at any point. This happens more often than you might think. Mid to late teen kids run away or are kicked out, they move to a new county and don’t enroll in school. It is especially the case for girls who might be living with an older male or being trafficked.

That's fair enough. I don't have that level of knowledge of human trafficking to have considered that angle.

There was a crazy group of kids in the Kennedy area at that time. This wasn’t gang related. There were a bunch of weird guys on drugs and some had obvious mental health issues.

My younger sibling knew this crowd back in the day. Sheinbein went nuts.

Also having fewer babies in general than other raises, and not immigrating here in large numbers from elsewhere.

For at least the past 10 years, Hispanic, Black, Asian, and Multiracial have *each* had more *absolute* (not percentage!) population growth than White.

Look at the two races or more category in the chart for MCPS. It doesn’t have explosive growth.

And if you watched the BOE meeting, they basically said a lot of the Hispanic students we’re picking up migrants fleeing from Central and South America.

So as a school system, we are replacing middle and higher income white students with higher need lower income Hispanic students. As a system that has an impact on the wellbeing and resources to the school system.

So you're a great replacement theorist, then?

No. I’m not even white.

That's what racists always claim to let us know it's okay for them to say racist things. It really isn't and nobody believes them.

Are you the same poster that assumed a story about an ex felon with 3 baby daddies was black but when the op came back and said you assumed wrong got the thread locked and then boosted older threads to cover up your closet racism like an angry cat in a litter box?

"story" is the correct word here, I think.

Correct. It has to be a “story” if it doesn’t align with your world view.

The poster they were responding to was pushing "replacement theory" which I think is popular among QAnon types.

You haven’t driven around silver spring in areas like wheaton/long branch/etc., have you?

Nah. It's nothing to do with my world view. Fiction is fiction, whether it fits into my world view (for example, Louise Erdrich's "The Sentence") or doesn't (for example, John Steinbeck's "Of Mice And Men").

Probably not the best idea to make major investments based on rumors reported by a preteen.

They aren't rumors. Read the news reports and testimonies from students and parents to the BOE. Many MCPS HS bathrooms are full of drug use and distribution, that is a fact.

We need adults watching kids using the bathroom!

If you look at the county demographic data this doesn't match. We still have plenty of white people living in MoCo. More of them are just opting to not send their children to MCPS.

But the demographic data also shows a bubble of the white population being older and elderly while the Hispanic population is younger. The birth rate is higher for young Hispanic women than white women too. It’s not white flight but the decline of that group while another group rises.

Right, the white people in MoCo aren't sending their children to MCPS or to any other school, because their children (if they have any) are long grown.
