Is this sharp rise in the MCPS hispanic population actually due to illegal immigration of poor and/or violent people from central america? If so this is definitely a broader society problem and blame can be placed on on federal government for it's open border polices.

If you read between the lines of the BOE meeting, it seems we’re getting an influx of the latter and not the former.

ICYMI: an 18 year old Latina was murdered by 3 other latinos (teens) this may and the killers were recently arrested. They cut off her head with a machete and dumped the body in a wooded area near a park in Olney.

It barely made the news.

^^^This is in our local schools. It’s a gang problem with rampant violence. It’s why many of them allegedly left Central America.

This story was crazy. I only read about it on the OBEX list serve because we live in the area. Not much (if any?) media coverage at all!

I guess this Latina girl’s life certainly didn’t matter to people here in the DMV.

A machete killing of an 18 yo girl. Let that sink in. Tragic and scary. Why did it not make the news?

Tragic and disturbing yes but not related to MCPS.

She was 18 and likely an MCPS student. How is it not related?

I just pasted news stories on the murder from 5 different news outlets. Stop saying it wasn't in the news.

I think what you really mean is that is there wasn't visceral and lasting community outrage about the incident in the same way that there was with the Magruder shooting. That is true and accurate. But it was covered in the news.

dp.. bad things happen to kids outside of school all over the country. People don't generally associate that bad event that happened outside the school with the school, especially if the perp is not part of the school.

These are both excellent school districts. You have nothing to worry about.

Not what I’ve heard from parent of recent Whitman grad. They were thrilled to be out of there.
Plus BCC has its own issues I’m sure. BCC kids attacked some other school in downtown Bethesda. Might have been Whitman actually. It was recent, look it up.

All MCPS MS and HS bathrooms are full of kids vaping and getting high. Anyone who tells you otherwise either only has ES kids, is in denial, or lives under a rock

Yes. I have kids at three different schools and they all say this is true. This flows more from the prevalence of vapes (easy to hide) and pot legalization than anything McPS does. I guess at private schools they have more staff to monitor the bathrooms and can kick kids out. My kids Say the girls bathrroom are worse because McPS doesn’t have enough female security officers to check the bathrooms. The teachers aren’t supposed to go in the kids bathrooms but some do anyway just to clear off the drug users.

Not in MoCo. You must never go to the MCCC, Rockville, or Bethesda/Chevy Chase Chamber of Commerce events. You'd be hard-pressed to find any far-right people -- it's the usual MoCo political crowd, all Dems.

They're all Democrats, now, because many people who used to be Republicans are now Democrats, because the Republican Party is no longer interested in contributing to a functional government.

Regardless, the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce does not have much of a voice at the federal level, which is where immigration policy happens. The national Chamber of Commerce does. And they've been aligned with the national Republicans for many, many decades.

Three were adults, two of whom didn't live in Montgomery County (one was listed as living in New Hampshire). One was 16, but the police didn't list where he lived in the press release.

One of the accused is 16 years old - 16-year-old Edwin Alexander Rivas-Salvador. He must have been enrolled in an MCPS high school. Which high school did he attend?

One of the people arrested is from Frederick, one is from New Hampshire, the one from Gaithersburg was arrested in Nevada. It's possible the 16 year old lives here and went to an MCPS high school, but to say he "must" have been enrolled isn't true. He could live somewhere else, like most of his codefendants.

As an 18 year old, she was either a current or former MCPS student. You don't think it would be traumatic to learn that a classmate was macheted to death in town?

When our school, Kennedy, had a student death, which also happened off-campus by the way, there was an immense amount of school support and messaging around the death. This IS an MCPS issue.

If she was 23, I could see your point, but an 18-year-old either was a present or very recently a former MCPS student.
