White flight from MCPS

Did the opposite. Pretty happy with the W experience. Downside is scale, but that's also the upside.

We just had two (white) families leave MCPS to go private. We are not White, but would do the same if we could afford it.

I have watched the school system get worse and worse over the past decade that we’ve had kids in MCPS. I feel for the teachers and would never encourage a family to live here if they had young kids.

During the pandemic, most of the Caucasian boys in our Chevy Chase street left for private. My (Asian) son stayed in MCPS.

That's because the parents didn't want to care for their kids or hire a nanny.

Anyone who says something like this is a complete fool. It’s definitely more complicated than that. And I’m not White. But you can clearly see the effects that ‘diversity’ has had on our public schools and the cons outweigh the pros.

I’d rather my non-White kid attend a safe, non-diverse school with strong teachers and a solid curriculum than a crappy, chaotic ‘diverse’ school with a lousy curriculum.

White family, moved here for the schools we thought were excellent, zoned for a W.

All I can say is, what a sh*tshow/dumpster fire.

Kids now attend private.

If they were in elementary I would have to find a way to send them to private. No children should have to attend some of these chaotic and unsafe schools. A student in the school I work at hit 18 (yes 18) students in one day in his class last week. Additionally he stuck several kids heads into trash cans. And this is not a one off. (Btw, don’t worry because I’m sure the half day in school suspension will really change things). How are kids supposed to learn when they are scared all the time?

I really wish that I could get out, but I’m too vested and will remain until I can retire. I don’t think it’s as much white flight as higher SES flight. If you have the means, you’re desperate to get out. As the whites traditionally have more means, you’re seeing a greater exodus. Just wish I could follow them…

This isnt an MCPS problem. It's happening all over the country right now. It's 100% a parenting problem. Parents do not raise their kids anymore. They rely on screens and schools to do it for them.

Misbehavior and criminal behavior among children started ticking up in 2019

And you're on the mcps board because?

If you look at the county demographic data this doesn't match. We still have plenty of white people living in MoCo. More of them are just opting to not send their children to MCPS.

80% of seniors in MoCo are white. What's the demo breakdown of school aged kids?

Exactly this. Sure there are lots of whites left in Montgomery County. But are they the ones with school aged kids?
Having said that I wouldn't send my kids to mcps again

NP - Everyone should be on the MCPS board - our $ supports it and our society depends on it.

Okay? I never mentioned the pandemic if that is what you're getting at. Parents stopped raising kids well before the pandemic, yes.

Bingo. You can’t just compare the county population as a whole to MCPS enrollment and draw clear inferences. You have to know the K-12 demographics both inside and outside the county in order to label a trend “white flight.” In some instances it’s just replacement, which has its own connotations in certain right-wing quarters but may be a more accurate description of what’s happening.

The US population is becoming less white and more Hispanic, btw.

Oh OK.

White people are having Hispanic and multiracial babies. Hybrid vigor.

Also having fewer babies in general than other raises, and not immigrating here in large numbers from elsewhere.

For at least the past 10 years, Hispanic, Black, Asian, and Multiracial have *each* had more *absolute* (not percentage!) population growth than White.
