White flight from MCPS

Anonymous

This was shared in the CIP BOE meeting. You can see the clear trendline that white non-hispanic students are fleeing MCPS while Hispanic rises. Black and Asian are holding pretty steady.

This was well covered a decade ago. TLDR defacto segregation is the problem. Maybe this long overdue boundary study will address it.

Uh Montgomery County used to be alot "whiter" why would the schools be any different?

Significant Growth of Hispanic student population and decline of white students has been known for decades.

The Predominantly white female teachers are leaving in droves too, and creating a “teacher shortage”.

Since these white female teachers can no longer discipline and criminalize the Hispanic and black students, their exodus has accelerated….

This “teacher shortage” was also predicted decades ago.

If you look at the county demographic data this doesn't match. We still have plenty of white people living in MoCo. More of them are just opting to not send their children to MCPS.

I’m an elementary teacher. I am so thankful that my kids are in high school so they are almost out of the disaster known as MCPS. If they were in elementary I would have to find a way to send them to private. No children should have to attend some of these chaotic and unsafe schools. A student in the school I work at hit 18 (yes 18) students in one day in his class last week. Additionally he stuck several kids heads into trash cans. And this is not a one off. (Btw, don’t worry because I’m sure the half day in school suspension will really change things). How are kids supposed to learn when they are scared all the time?

I really wish that I could get out, but I’m too vested and will remain until I can retire. I don’t think it’s as much white flight as higher SES flight. If you have the means, you’re desperate to get out. As the whites traditionally have more means, you’re seeing a greater exodus. Just wish I could follow them…

True, the segregated schools are as white as ever.

By school age?

During the pandemic, most of the Caucasian boys in our Chevy Chase street left for private. My (Asian) son stayed in MCPS.

This isnt an MCPS problem. It's happening all over the country right now. It's 100% a parenting problem. Parents do not raise their kids anymore. They rely on screens and schools to do it for them.

80% of seniors in MoCo are white. What's the demo breakdown of school aged kids?

W school. Left for private half-way through elementary. Glad we did.

How do you think this can be fixed?

It seems like it always comes down to a racial thing. And I don't know how to get around that.
