We are in the Midwest, and it seems to be a popular school that has a reputation of being somewhat difficult to get into from out of state. I'm not sure if that is due to academic standards or volume of applicants.

We are in DC area and decent amount apply and it's pretty competitive OOS and does require tests. Some of the kids around here also apply to: South Carolina, UF, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, UMD.

This - we're in NJ and a family friend is down to offers between Georgia, Wisconsin, Maryland and just got the likely postcard from William and Mary (which seems like an outlier).

Has he visited all? Where is he leaning? I guess they're all big state schools but wondering if they're different vibes.

My DD visited all of those. She wound up not liking either Wisconsin or W&M so didn’t apply. But she is considering both UGA and UMD.

What didn't she like about Wisconsin?

More urban, cold, didn’t think the campus was as nice as some other places. I really thought she would like it. She did like the lake.

That’s my take too. The lake is nice, but the rest of the campus is bleh.

Did she visit and like UMD and UGA? My DS plans on UGA if he doesn't get into others (he's in UMD)

When people talk about UGA being a bus campus, is it just kids who don't like to walk or is the bus truly a necessity? Realistically how long does it take to walk from a freshman dorm to class?
Anonymous
UGA is truly a bus campus. The campus is massive, sprawling and very hilly. My child learned after first semester to schedule her classes at least an hour apart unless she could somehow manage to get classes located somewhat close together. She preferred to walk, but the bus was often a necessity and often overcrowded. The high rise dorms are located centrally, but there are dorms scattered throughout the campus.

Is this a reason not to attend!

She is much more likely to attend UGA than UMD. Has visited UGA twice. She really wants to get out of the DC area for college and prefers being in a college town.

She didn’t apply to UF.

A kid from the DMV won't fit in. UGA students are admittedly high-achievers with no ambitions outside of returning to their dad's insurance company in BFE, GA.

My friend's son just graduated and is making 85k in DC. Other one in grad school, and a third working in NYC in finance. Such a bizarre reply. Did you child go there and leave?

I'm a military spouse who lives in Georgia and regularly sees the type. My kid did not bother applying there, no.

You see the UGA graduates all working for their families insurance companies? Your kid "didn't bother" - or couldn't get in?

Kids from the Midwest and NE are flocking to Southern schools, and many are surprised by how competitive they have become. In our area, UVA and UNC are considered dream schools and huge reaches for OOS kids. I would say UGA is a slightly more attainable school for the same group of kids who are good students looking for that work hard play hard culture.
