What are the other choices?

It is hard to get into, It's a great school, it's the second best college town next to Boulder.
Go Dawgs

Great college town. Blows away College Park and Charlottesville in that category.

Love Athens. Love Boulder. Like Charlottesville a lot. Madison crushes them all, though. (I can see a skier preferring Boulder, of course, but town-for-town, it's no contest.)

You're reminding me that my nephew was rejected at top choice W and heading to UGA (and trying to convince himself that Athens will be ok, even though he loved Madison).

He'll love Athens and UGA, no doubt. Don't even sweat that.

Surprised that a kid who got into UGA would be rejected at Wisconsin. My impression is that UF and UGA passed Madison in academics a few years ago. But I guess there are always outliers. All three are great schools.

That's because you take your cues from USNWR. In the real world, Wisconsin is a great school (having largely rebounded from the Walker administration's malfeasance); UGA is a good and improving school; and UF is a good but rapidly deteriorating school (as DeSantis makes Walker look like a rank amateur when it comes to cutting down institutions of higher learning).

This is patently false. UF has been going nowhere but up in the rankings since De Santis became governor. There's probably no connection between those two things, but still it's far from "rapidly deteriorating."

WSJ ranked UF top public. Definitely strong national reputation.

D25 is building a college list and considering applying to UGA. What schools share applicants with UGA? We are in the Midwest, and it seems to be a popular school that has a reputation of being somewhat difficult to get into from out of state. I'm not sure if that is due to academic standards or volume of applicants.

We are in DC area and decent amount apply and it's pretty competitive OOS and does require tests. Some of the kids around here also apply to: South Carolina, UF, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, UMD.

This - we're in NJ and a family friend is down to offers between Georgia, Wisconsin, Maryland and just got the likely postcard from William and Mary (which seems like an outlier).

Has he visited all? Where is he leaning? I guess they're all big state schools but wondering if they're different vibes.

I think it's a combo of both. They require tests and you need a decent GPA. It's not impossible to get into, but by no means a safety. It has about a 25% OOS acceptance. I think it's also becoming more popular since Athens ia awesome, great sports, nice weather and good academics. A con is it's almost 2 hours from the airport.

How does he like UGA?

If you like, taking a bus to class or to get to the other side of Campus UGA is for you.

Is that what your nephew said? Or you went there? we walked the campus when we toured and it was fine. UMD also huge and I was in the best shape of my life. Plus weather is nice.

I went there and the bus comment is the reality. I had to take a bus from my dorm to class and then another bus to cross campus for another class. It’s a huge campus.

I think it's similar size to UMD and Wisconsin... they all have long walks esp from dorms. At least UGA is nice weather!

Why wouldn't they? It's like Wisconsin but without the cold.

I just realized that UGA and Auburn are almost exactly the same distance from ATL. Interesting.

And Auburn’s actually easier because you avoid Atlanta traffic altogether.

My DD visited all of those. She wound up not liking either Wisconsin or W&M so didn’t apply. But she is considering both UGA and UMD.

What didn't she like about Wisconsin?
