No. They do but it’s very limited and the amount is much smaller than Alabama. It’s a much harder school to get into so I assume they don’t need to offer much.

Is it so good that people pay full tuition?

Has Georgia been steadily climbing for the last few years? Do you think they will continue to attract strong students and move up in the rankings? We're new to the college search, and I am admittedly surprised by the acceptance rates of schools that were not on my radar as being super selective.

I notice Georgia does not get as many applications (still a lot!) as some of the other schools in the South, like Tennessee or Florida, but their admitted and enrolled students have generally impressive stats. Any idea why?

Florida less southern and lots of Jewish people if that's what you want or are Jewish. It attracts NY NJ more. TN easier to get into than UGA but seems to be changing each year so prob irrelevant soon!

Florida politics is affecting FL higher education. TN is not the same caliber as UGA.

But why do both schools get more apps than GA?

I personally think UGA suffers from its large percentage of in-state students. It turns off lots of potential OOS students.

How so? The school has no trouble filling its 20% allotment for OOS students.

I was speaking of the hard number of applications.

Friends of my kid's who applied to places like South Carolina, didn't bother applying to UGA because they know they won't get in (given both required test scores and 25% OOS acceptance rate). Also, UGA has a supplemental essay unlike some of the schools they applied to.

Where do the South Carolina kids apply?

Do you mean what other schools do students who apply to U of SC apply to? I think places like Delaware, Delaware, UConn, Coastal Carolina. UMD (bc we are in state) and Salisbury.

This isn't accurate at all. UofSC's average GPA is above 4.0

What? I’m talking about actual kids I know and where they applied. I didn’t mention GPA. I don’t know their GPA.

I would add Wisconsin and UMD. All are great schools, and UGA has been quietly climbing the last few years. UVA and Michigan are thought of as being in a different (higher) league where we live. We aren’t in state at any the above schools, and our state flagship is fine but not great. I’m envious of the families who have access to such amazing schools with in state tuition.

Like it or not, all of these schools attract high performing students from both in state and oos, but they also admit a lot of kids from in state who would not and are not able to get into the other schools oos. They are established "brands", and UGA may not be there yet, but I really don't think the student body at any of these schools differs that much.

The schools listed are not academic peers for UofSC other than UMD. Maybe UofSC was a reach for those kids.

What schools would you consider to be academic peers for UGA?

Florida, UNC, UVA, Michigan

UGA an academic peer of Michigan? It’s not even an academic peer of Florida, let alone UNC or UVA. Dream on.

Like it or not, all of these schools attract high performing students from both in state and oos, but they also admit a lot of kids from in state who would not and are not able to get into the other schools oos. They are established "brands", and UGA may not be there yet, but I really don't think the student body at any of these schools differs that much.

Exactly. UGA has arrived.

South Carolina must have a different grade scale that goes up to 6.0. If you look at the range of grades for the honors college the upper end is over 5. So whatever averages they are reporting are on a weighted scale with a very high upper limit.

Just like UGA is not regarded as highly as UMich or UC Berkeley, U of SC is not regarded the same as UGA. UGA is not an easy admit.
